The tourism sector, in particular, made major leaps forward turning the country into Africa’s most popular tourist destination and one of the most competitive in the mediterranean region. In the first half this year, Morocco unseated Egypt by becoming Africa’s first tourist destination with 7.4 million visitors, letting tourism officials in the country express optimism to break a new record this year. By 2030, the year Morocco will co-host the World Cup together with Spain and Portugal, the country expects to attract 26 million tourists. This steady increase in arrivals translates into higher foreign currency inflow, with receipts in 2023 at a record $10.5 billion. Currently representing 7% of Morocco’s GDP, the expansion of the tourism sector will offer jobs to Moroccan youth with many more indirect jobs created in the catering, entertainment and other related sectors.

SEOUL, South Korea — Australia’s foreign minister said Tuesday the recent defense deal between North Korea and Russia was “destabilizing” and “risky for the world,” after she visited the tense border village shared by North and South Korea on Tuesday. “I also want to say something about the security pact between North Korea and Russia. “We share great concerns about DPRK’s escalatory reactions, destabilizing actions,” she said, referring to North Korea by the acronym of its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been running high in recent months, with North Korea flying trash-carrying balloons toward South Korea and continuing weapons tests. South Korea has responded by resuming anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts and live-fire drills at border areas.

Baby steps have been taken towards greater gender diversity within the African tech startup ecosystem, but much more needs to be done if anything close to parity is to be achieved, according to a new report released by Disrupt Africa. Since launching its research arm in 2016, Disrupt Africa has built up a significant portfolio of publications, most notably the African Tech Startups Funding Report, Finnovating for Africa, and deep-dives into various leading startup ecosystems, available free for all via open-sourcing initiatives with various partners across the continent’s tech ecosystem. Its latest report, the company’s 24th in total, is the second edition of “Diversity Dividend: Exploring Gender Equality in the African Tech Ecosystem”, Disrupt Africa’s annual deep-dive into the state of gender diversity in the African startup and venture capital ecosystems. Of 2,600 African tech startups studied for the purposes of the publication, just 17.3 per cent had at least one female co-founder, and 11.1 per cent had a female CEO. The percentage of total African tech funding raised by ventures with at least one female co-founder increased to 16.6 per cent in 2023 from 9.3 per cent in 2022.

The Tutsi-led M23 have been waging a fresh insurgency in the vast central African country’s militia-plagued east since 2022. Military efforts to push them back have intensified over the past year with the use of drones and aircraft. Congo authorities, the United Nations, the United States and other Western governments have accused Rwanda of backing the group. Rwanda vehemently denies the accusations that have heavily soured relations with its neighbour.

The strike, which the United States and Israel have attributed to the Iran-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah, was the deadliest attack on Israel or an Israeli-controlled territory since the Hamas-led attack of Oct. 7, 2023. Early on Sunday, Israel said it had struck Hezbollah targets “deep inside Lebanese territory” and in the south of the country. The airstrikes are thought to be part of Israel’s ongoing operations against the militant group and not its response to Saturday’s attack. Israel and Hezbollah have traded fire since Oct. 8, 2023, when the militant group, which dominates southern Lebanon, launched a volley of attacks on northern Israel in solidarity with Hamas. Hezbollah presents a potentially greater threat to Israel than Hamas in the event of a full-scale war.

“I am deeply saddened by these horrific attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, apartments and markets. Civilian infrastructures should never be a target and are protected under the international humanitarian law,” said Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan. Resumption of livelihoods and other economic activities, unimpeded humanitarian access, and upscaling of humanitarian funding are critical for Sudan to avert the looming threat of famine. More than 18,800 people have been killed and over 33,000 injured since the conflict broke out in April 2023, according to humanitarian partners. Despite limited funding and a challenging operating environment, humanitarian partners are on the ground and have reached over 7.1 million people with some form of humanitarian assistance between January and May.

King Mohammed VI underscored the need to address the water challenge by speeding up desalination projects that are powered by renewable energies. “This will also make it possible to irrigate vast farming areas, thereby helping to enhance the country’s food security,” he said. The monarch also called for “the development of a national water desalination industry as well as courses for the training of specialized engineers and technicians. “Considering the efforts that are being made to provide water for us all, we ought to be honest with ourselves regarding the sound, rational use of water resources. Indeed, spending billions and billions in order to mobilize water resources, only to see that cases of waste and misuse continue to exist, is unacceptable.” The King said.

King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, urged a break away with crisis management in favor of a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that would help achieve an independent Palestinian state, including Gaza territory, with eastern Jerusalem as its capital. “In keeping with the same spirit of commitment and responsibility, I continue to back constructive initiatives aimed at finding practical solutions, achieving a tangible and permanent ceasefire, and addressing the humanitarian situation,” the King said in a speech on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his accession to the throne. “The deteriorating conditions in the region require going beyond the logic of crisis management and seeking, instead, a final solution to this conflict,” he said. Such a solution should be first based on putting an end to the war in Gaza as an urgent priority, then this must be achieved concurrently with opening up political prospects conducive to a just and lasting peace in the region. “The keen interest we take in the situation prevailing in the country does not mean we are oblivious of, or insensitive to, the tragedy befalling our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” he insisted.
