"The Southern Hydrogen Corridor will provide renewable hydrogen imports from North Africa via southern Italy and further connect to the major hydrogen demand hubs in Italy, Austria and Germany," the German ministry said in a statement. The link dubbed SoutH2, which last year won priority status from the European Commission, is considered important to develop a European market for the renewable fuel.A group of companies including Italian gas grid operator Snam has teamed up to build the SoutH2 pipeline by the beginning of the next decade, with a financial commitment of more than 4 billion euros (USD 4.3 billion). "The southern corridor will play an important role, especially in supplying the southern German states with green hydrogen ," Germany's Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habeck said in a statement.Last year sources told Reuters Italy was in preliminary talks with Bavaria's government to supply gas and hydrogen to the southern German state, adding Rome also aimed to sell energy to Austria. The European Union aims to produce 10 million metric tons and import 10 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030 in a bid to replace fossil fuels, which emit planet-warming gases when burned.Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water through electrolysis using renewable energy.

Tunisia has added the final nail in Algeria’s attempt to create a Maghreb union that excludes and isolates Morocco. The Algerian president has spoken about a union in the making with Tunisia and Libya due to the inaction of the Maghreb union that also includes Mauritania and Morocco. However, the recent appointment by Tunisia’s President Kais Saied of a new Secretary General of the five-state Arab Maghreb Union, indicates a resounding failure of Tebboune’s three-state union. The founding treaty of the Rabat-based union stipulates that the head of the Rabat-based UMA secretariat general should be of Tunisian nationality. The new secretary general will have to deal with the reluctance of Algeria to pay its contributions to the Union.

Russia has promised military support for Sudan in return for a naval base in the Red Sea, General Yasirr Al Atta, member of Sudan’s military-led Sovereign Council said. A series of military and economic deals will be signed, signaling an inroad by Russia in the Horn of Africa, after it managed to strengthen its foothold in the Sahel by offering military support, while taking advantage of rising anti-western sentiment. “Russia proposed military cooperation through a logistical support centre, not a full military base, in return for urgent weapons and ammunition supplies,” Al Atta said in an interview with Alhadath TV. We agreed to this but suggested expanding the cooperation to include economic aspects like agricultural ventures, mining partnerships, and port development. The UN estimates the death toll since the outbreak of the civil war in Sudan at over 14,000, with no end in sight.
