North Korea was one of the first countries to act on reports of COVID-19 circulating in early 2020, sealing itself off from the outside world and its economic lifeline in China. There was no [informal] trade with China, not even to get some rice or a bag of wheat. If [authorities] heard of a soldier allowing that, that person would just disappear,” the trade said in the report. Peter Ward, a research fellow at the South Korea-based Sejong Institute who was not involved in the report, said that North Korea has yet to move on from COVID like other countries have. North Korea’s normalisation has been delayed a lot and arguably they haven’t really finished normalisation yet,” Ward told Al Jazeera.

France has said it will keep its 1,000 troops in junta-run Chad amid waning French influence after it was ousted from several African countries over the past few years, just as apparent calm has returned to Chad’s capital N’Djamena following the assassination of an opposition leader. The envoy also said he conveyed Paris’ “admiration” to Deby Itno for the country’s transition to civilian rule after he took power following his father’s three-decade iron-fisted rule. All three military-run governments also formed a military alliance, and declared a number of economic steps revoking previous French exploitation of their countries’ resources. Meanwhile, Deby Itno has announced he planned to run in this year’s long-delayed presidential race days after his main opponent was killed in murky circumstances. The authorities have also confirmed that Deby’s uncle, Gen Saleh Deby Itno, had been arrested in the wake of the recent events.

The European Union is planning to offer 210 million euros to help Mauritania curb illegal migration to the Canary Islands, which reported a record number of arrivals last year. The batch includes €60 million to be allocated to migration management, the Financial Times reported. The rest will be invested in security, economic development, and humanitarian aid in Mauritania, which emerged as the main departure point for West African migrants bound for the Canary Islands. In the first two months of 2024, almost 12,000 people arrived on the Canary Islands by boat, according to the Spanish interior ministry, compared to fewer than 2,000 in the same period last year. Last year, the Canary Islands accounted for most arrivals in Spain with near 40,000, compared with 56,852 migrants that entered the country by land or sea in 2023.

Henry Roman, Regional Representative for Southern Africa at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) believes the circular economy represents an opportunity. There’s more to circular economies than just recyclingIn adopting the circular economy, Africa can chart a path towards a more inclusive and sustainable future, where economic prosperity is intrinsically linked to environmental stewardship and societal well-being. For a just transition, we must take a system-thinking approach in implementation of the circular economy, because economic transformation has to be inclusive. “Circular economy has the potential to create new forms of work and reduce societal inequalities in Africa, and the world at large,” concluded Roman. The International Water Management Institute is a non-profit international water management research organisation under global partnership CGIAR with offices across Africa and Asia, and headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
