Russia’s ambassador to Chad Vladimir Sokolenko inaugurated over the weekend the first Russian Cultural center in the central African country to bolster ties between the two countries. Named “Russkiy Dom” the culture center located in capital N’djamena is an initiative of Chadian alumni of Russian universities. It seeks to be a dynamic place for social life, where residents can express, design and carry out their projects, and aims to become a model in the field of continuing education thanks to a forward-looking vision of development, local media “Alwhida Info” reports. The center will provide the teaching of the Russian language, stage events, provide translation services and tour guiding services. Safia Ahmat Ibrahim, the President of the Center, said that the Russikiy Dom envisions to be a crossroads for Russian culture in Chad and beyond, offering a safe space for growth, education, learning, expression, encounters, and dialogue.

The inaugural ‘ESG MENA Bank Tracker’ report by EY found that nearly three-quarters of the MENA banks currently have well-developed ESG strategies in place. “This showcases the growing recognition of the significance of ESG factors in the region’s banking sector and underscoring the commitment of MENA banks to sustainability and responsible financial practices,” said Charlie Alexander, who leads EY’s Financial Services practice in the MENA region. The report also highlights that less than 20% of the banks have developed climate risk policies, and only a fifth have created robust ESG frameworks backed up by key performance indicators. “It’s inspiring to see many banks in the region expanding their offerings of sustainable finance products, particularly in key markets,” said Jessica Robinson, MENA Sustainable Finance Leader at EY. “Nevertheless, given the MENA region’s heightened vulnerability to the effects of climate change, it is imperative that banks act swiftly to incorporate climate risk assessments into their comprehensive risk management frameworks.

DAKAR, Nov 13 (Reuters) - At least 70 civilians have been killed, mainly elderly people and children, in an attack on a village in northern Burkina Faso earlier this month, a prosecutor said in a statement on Monday. Unidentified assailants attacked the village of Zaongo in Burkina Faso's northern Centre-North region on Nov. 5, killing residents and setting property on fire. A judicial team sent to investigate on Nov. 11 found that at least 70 people had died. Most of the victims were children and elderly, a state prosecutor said in a statement. Burkina Faso is one of several West African countries battling a bloody jihadist insurgency that took root in neighbouring Mali in 2012.

In 2024, Nigeria is expected to see about 26.5 million people grappling with high levels of food insecurity, as disclosed by the Government of Nigeria and its partners during the unveiling of the October 2023 Cadre Harmonisé analysis on food insecurity. Persistent violence in the north-eastern states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) hinders food availability and access. Of the 18.6 million people who experience food insecurity today, 3.3 million live in the northeastern states of the BAY region. This number might rise to 26.5 million nationwide by the height of the 2024 lean season ( and to 4.4 million in the BAY states) if immediate action is not taken. Trend analysis for the northeastern states indicates consistently high or rising food insecurity levels since 2018.

CIPD’s annual survey finds that workforce planning and building skills and capacity are vital focus areas for businesses in the MENA region. Championing equality, diversity, and inclusion is a key workforce priority for businesses in Saudi Arabia, specifically. CIPD finds that 80% of respondents in the Middle East and North Africa upskilled in the last 12 months, compared to 69% of global respondents. Nearly a fifth of respondents in Egypt cite building specialist HR expertise as a critical improvement area, compared to 26% of professionals in KSA and 22% in UAE. The survey finds that 42% of people professionals believe their role is changing significantly due to technology, suggesting that job roles are evolving alongside the impact of digital transformation.
