Savills said on Monday that it has appointed David Lipson as the new chief executive of its North America business with effect from 1 January 2024. Lipson replaces Mitch Rudin, who has been CEO since July 2020 and will become chairman of Savills North America on his appointment. Lipson has been with Savills North America - and its predecessor firm Studley Inc - since 1987, and until his appointment as president of Savills North America in January 2021 headed its Washington office. Savills said he will be responsible for leading the next stage of the business’s growth. Chief executive Mark Ridley said: "His experience will be instrumental in leading a strong management team to deliver our growth aspirations for the business over the coming years."

Fighting resumed Sunday (12 November) between Mali’s armed forces and Tuareg separatist rebel groups in the country’s northern region, after the soldiers reportedly closed in on the strategic town of Kidal. Malian army’s clashes with with Tuareg separatist and rebel groups could signal the start of fighting for the strategically important northern crossroads. The Kidal desert area is a key site on the road to Algeria and a historic hotbed of insurrection. Military, political and rebel sources all reported the clashes, but details could not be confirmed independently in the remote region. But residents in the area have been braced for a confrontation since the Tuareg rebellion took up arms again in August.

Royal Air Maroc has confirmed a repeat order for two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The North African airline, currently operating nine Dreamliners, underscores the efficiency and flexibility of the 787 family in its strategy to modernize and grow its widebody fleet. EgyptAir has inked a groundbreaking deal with Air Lease Corporation (ALC) for the long-term leasing of 18 new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The research shows one challenge is that too many agencies are involved in granting and administering investment incentives. The administration of other tax incentives, such as exemptions on customs and import duties, are spread even more widely across different government authorities. The OECD says this “risks generating an uneven playing field”, where smaller investors are discouraged by the significant time and resources needed to understand incentives. Tax incentives are often used to make up for weaknesses in the investment environment of developing countries in particular.

1 in 3 children – or 739 million worldwide – already live in areas exposed to high or very high water scarcity, with climate change threatening to make this worse, according to a new UNICEF report. It provides an analysis of the impacts of three tiers of water security globally – water scarcity, water vulnerability, and water stress*. “The consequences of climate change are devastating for children,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. In 2022, 436 million children were living in areas facing extreme water vulnerability. Climate change is also leading to increased water stress – the ratio of water demand to available renewable supplies – the report warns.
