Athens, Oct 11:A group of 75 migrants crossing to Europe from North Africa has been rescued from a crippled boat south of the island of Crete, Greek authorities said Friday. The coast guard said the migrants, who are believed to have set off from eastern Libya, were picked up in the Mediterranean Sea by a merchant ship after issuing a distress call. The vessel, escorted by a coast guard patrol boat, was taking them to a port in southern Crete. People who have completed the crossing told Greek authorities they paid smuggling gangs up to 9,000 euros ($9,800) each for the passage. The crossing from Libya takes at least two days, while a fast smuggling boat from Turkey can reach the eastern islands in well under an hour, provided it can dodge frequent coast guard patrols.

Oued Beht yielded domesticated plant and animal remains, pottery - including painted types - polished axes and chipped stone. The Oued Beht Archaeological Project's recent "re-discovery" of Oued Beht emerged from a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach. Oil and gas dependent Algeria launched the first episode of its trade war against France by banning imports of French wheat. The Algerian military-held state criticizes France for its sovereign decision to back Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. Meanwhile, most of French exports to Algeria are manufactured goods and foodstuff. Algeria’s trade war with France could further undermine the Algerian economy which reported a surplus of some 2.5 billion euros in trade with France. While France can easily replace Algerian gas, if need be, Algeria cannot find alternative markets to import fresh produce and manufactured goods without affecting prices domestically, where inflation is already double digit.
