International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam has clarified the identities of two war crimes convicts named Akram to resolve confusion following a Supreme Court acquittal. The clarification came on Thursday after the Appellate Division overturned the 2014 ICT judgement that had sentenced Khan Akram Hossain from Bagerhat to imprisonment until death. The Chief Prosecutor explained that two separate individuals named Akram were tried and convicted by the tribunal. Khan Akram Hossain was sentenced to stay in prison until death in 2014, and is the son of Jainal Abedin, the prosecutor said. The chief prosecutor noted that the record of the 2014 case contains no mention of the other Akram’s trial.

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir issued the warning on Thursday after a meeting with LPG importers and suppliers at the Secretariat, where he addressed the ongoing supply and pricing crisis. The High Court has granted six months’ interim bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five cases, including ones filed over murder allegations. Police arrested Ivy from her residence in Narayanganj city in the early hours of May 9 last year. She was later shown arrested in three cases filed over alleged murders and two over attempted murders in connection with the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. After being denied bail by a lower court in these five cases, she filed separate petitions with the High Court and secured bail. After the hearing, the High Court granted her six months’ interim bail with a rule,” he said.
