CHATTOGRAM, Feb 18, 2026 (BSS)- The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) hasfiled a case against Mahfuzur Rahman Mita, the former Member of Parliament(MP) for Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) Constituency and chairman of Rupali LifeInsurance Company Ltd. The case was filed by the ACC's Chattogram Integrated District Office-2 onWednesday (February 18). ACC Chattogram Integrated District Office-1 Deputy Director Subel Ahmedstated to journalists that the case was filed against Mahfuzur Rahman forallegedly amassing wealth of approximately Taka 9.88 million beyond his knownincome. Mahfuzur Rahman filed income tax returns from the tax year2002-03 to the tax year 2024-25. The case mentioned that the sources of assets totaling Taka 9, 88, 30 147have not been identified as legitimate savings excluding expenses.

In his first televised address to the nation as prime minister, Tarique Rahman on Wednesday pledged to restore the rule of law, curb corruption, dismantle criminal syndicates, and ensure equal rights for all citizens, describing the new government as “accountable to the people” and committed to democratic renewal. The prime minister also stressed that all constitutional, government, and private institutions would operate strictly according to statutory policies and regulations. “Not party influence, not prestige, not force -- the rule of law will be the final word in running the state,” he declared. Curb profiteering, ensure essential servicesWith the holy month of Ramadan beginning Thursday, PM Tarique urged traders to refrain from price manipulation and excessive profiteering. “May Allah keep us safe and grant us the ability to fulfill our commitments,” he said, ending his first address as prime minister with a prayer for unity and progress.

The government has issued a gazette notification appointing Atikur Rahman Bhuiyan as additional press secretary to the prime minister on a contractual basis. The notification, signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Nur-e-Alam of the Ministry of Public Administration, said the appointment will take effect from the date of his joining in the Grade-2 pay scale. According to the order, Bhuiyan must relinquish any professional engagement with other occupations, businesses, or organizations—government, semi-government or private—before assuming the post. The contract will remain valid for the tenure of the prime minister or until further notice, whichever comes earlier. The order was issued in the public interest, the notification added.

The government has appointed Abu Abdullah as press secretary to the prime minister on a contractual basis. A notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Tuesday said the appointment will take effect from the date of joining. He will receive the status and salary equivalent to that of a secretary to the government, with a monthly basic pay of Tk78,000. The appointment has been made on condition that he severs ties with any other profession, business or organization—government, semi-government or private—before assuming the post. Other terms and conditions of the appointment will be determined by the contract, the notification added.

The Ministry of Education has decided to keep educational institutions closed throughout the month of Ramadan by revising the 2026 academic calendar. The revised holiday schedule was published on Wednesday by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the ministry. According to the new schedule, lower secondary and secondary schools will remain closed from Thursday. Last Sunday, after hearing a writ petition, the High Court ordered that schools remain closed for the entire month of Ramadan. It may be noted that the revised schedule includes a holiday during Ramadan on February 21 to mark Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day.

From the charred walls of its office, Prothom Alo on Wednesday unveiled an art exhibition titled “Alo” (Light) -- transforming a site of violence into a space of reflection and resilience. File PhotoKHULNA, Feb 18, 2026 (BSS) - Mongla Port, the country's second-largestseaport, has set a new record in container handling during the first sevenmonths of the 2025-26 fiscal year, marking a significant rise in maritimetrade activity. According to officials of the Mongla Port Authority, the port handled 21,651TEU containers between July 2025 and January 2026, surpassing the total21,456 TEUs handled in the entire 2024-25 fiscal year. Among them were 31 foreign commercial container vessels. The new facilities will nowallow the handling of commercial vessels up to 200 meters in length and 9.00meters draft.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman presided over the meeting. Earlier, Tareque Rahman arrived at the Cabinet Division in Bangladesh Secretariat around 12.30 pm to chair the first cabinet meeting of his government. On his arrival, Cabinet Secretary Dr Nasimul Ghani and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar welcomed the new Prime Minister.
