Colombian President Gustavo Petro said Monday he would “take up arms” in the face of threats from US counterpart Donald Trump, who over the weekend seized the leader of neighboring Venezuela in a military strike. According to the Bangladesh Mobile Phone Importers’ Association (BMPIA), around 35 million mobile phone sets are sold annually in the country, with an average life cycle of two to four years. As a result, nearly 30 million mobile phones turn into e-waste each year. Saidur Rahman Shahin, managing director of Azizu Recycling and E-Waste Company Ltd, said formal recyclers receive less than 20 percent of obsolete mobile phones discarded each year. He explained that mobile phones are dismantled into plastics, metals, and ICs. “This is the picture of Bangladesh’s e-waste governance—where policy exists largely on paper while enforcement remains weak,” he said.

In continuation of reforms in the banking sector, Bangladesh Bank is taking a tough stance against non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs). The central bank has started the process of liquidating the shares of nine financial institutions for failing to return customer deposits for a long time. Bangladesh Bank sources said that many NBFIs are in deep crisis due to widespread irregularities and corruption during the ousted Awami League government. The institutions are People's Leasing, International Leasing, Bangladesh Industrial Finance Company (BIFC), FAS Finance, Aviva Finance, Fareast Finance, GSP Finance, Prime Finance and Premier Leasing. Of this, small depositors have deposits of Tk3,525 crore and deposits of banks and corporate institutions are Tk11,845 crore.

Vessel owners have suspended the operation of their boats, launches, and trawlers in protest against what they described as harassment by Department of Shipping. According to sources, Department of Shipping (Khulna) dismantled and removed the upper structures of at least 30 boats stationed in the Mongla ferry terminal area. Boat owners allege that this action damaged the appearance of the boats and destroyed comfortable seating arrangements for tourists. In protest against the move, affected boat owners announced an indefinite strike. He added that the Department of Shipping has imposed several conditions that are too expensive for boat owners to fulfill.

Tension erupted in Ullapara upazila on Monday after members of the local Hindu community staged a protest, alleging obstruction in the cremation of Mina Banik, wife of the late Ganesh Banik of Jhikira Mohalla. “We were forced to take my mother’s body to the upazila premises and protest,” said Santosh Babuk, the deceased’s son.
