The National Citizen Party (NCP) secured the third-highest number of seats, six, and 3.05 per cent votes. Tarique Rahman visited Jamaat chief at his residence along with party’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamigir. Soon after, the BNP’s media wing released a photograph showing the two rival party leaders standing side by side with Shafiqur Rahman seen holding a bouquet to be handed over to Tarique Rahman. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 49.97%, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami gained 31.76% of total votes cast in the 13th parliamentary election held on February 12 last. Besides, National Citizen Party-NCP obtained 3.05percent votes, Islami Andolan Bangladesh pocketed 2.70% votes, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish gained 2.09% and Jatiya Party got only 0.89%, according to the statistics of the Election Commission. In the election, 274 independent contestants bagged 5.79% votes. Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarker on Sunday said the Election Commission (EC) would consider recounting votes in disputed constituencies if directed by a court, following allegations of irregularities raised by a Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance. Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission headquarters, Anwarul said the commission has responded to the alliance’s formal complaint submitted earlier in the day. “The Election Commission will take a decision regarding vote recount if there is an order from the court,” he said, adding that there is no legal bar to any aggrieved party seeking judicial remedy. However, the EC said recounting is not possible at this stage as the official gazette has already been published. Responding to allegations that the commission hurriedly published the gazette notification, Anwarul rejected the claim.
