Earlier this month, Guterres said the United Nations was preparing talks with both sides in Geneva, but without specifying a date. Sudan's army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said last week he was ready to work with Trump to resolve the conflict, following talks in Riyadh with Prince Mohammed. Saudi Arabia is part of a four-nation mediation group, alongside the United States, United Arab Emirates and Egypt, that has stepped up diplomatic efforts in recent months. Egypt, a key ally of Sudan's army, warned on Thursday that escalating violence "directly affects Egyptian national security" and stressed that preserving Sudanese state institutions remains a "red line".

NARSINGDI, Dec 20, 2025 (BSS) - Police arrested four drug traffickers along with 5.7 kilograms of ganja in two separate operations in Belabo upazila of the district. According to police, acting on a tip-off, a team led by Sub-Inspector Arif of Belabo Police Station set up a checkpoint on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway near Darikandi Bus Stand Jame Mosque on Friday night. On the same day, in another operation, police arrested two more drug traffickers with 4 kilograms of ganja from in front of Labiba Bus Counter at Baraicha Bus Stand area of Belabo upazila. They were identified as Sharif Ahmed, 20, and Md Shanto, 21, both hailing from Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Belabo Police Station SM Aman Ullah said two separate cases were filed under Belabo Police Station, and legal action was taken under Section 36(1)19(a) of the Narcotics Control Act.

Miscreants set fire to the office of the Senior District Election Officer in Kushtia Sadar upazila on Saturday. Office staff said the fire was set around 8:30AM by pouring inflammable materials through a rear window of the office building. On information, Deputy Commissioner Iqbal Hossain visited the election office around 9:30am. Election office security guard Razzak said, "Sensing smoke and the smell of fire, I rushed downstairs and saw the fire." Two Bangladeshi youths were shot dead by Indian Khasis near the Sylhet border on Friday, according to local administration officials, police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The incident occurred around noon at the Damdama border under Uttar Ranikai Union of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet. According to BGB and police sources, Ashiqur Rahman was shot at a place called Paraihat, about 600 yards inside Indian territory near Sub-Pillar No. Around the same time, Moshaeed Ali was shot dead by Khasis near the Radan area, close to the border on the Indian side. Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam, citing BGB sources, confirmed that two Bangladeshi youths were killed by gunfire from across the border.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Saturday expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Abdul Karim Khandker, widely known as AK Khandker, Bir Uttam. AK Khandker, a freedom fighter, former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Liberation Forces, first Chief of the Bangladesh Air Force and former government minister, passed away at 10:35am on Saturday due to old age complications. In a condolence message, President Shahabuddin recalled his significant contributions to the 1971 Liberation War and prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul. A distinguished freedom fighter and visionary military leader, AK Khandker played a key role in the Liberation War as Deputy Chief of Staff under the Mujibnagar government. After independence, he became the first chief of the Bangladesh Air Force, spearheading efforts to rebuild and strengthen the force.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven people as suspects in connection with the killing of a Hindu youth who was beaten to death in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district. Chief Adviser's Press Wing disclosed the information on Saturday, reports BSS. Security has been tightened at the Indian Assistant High Commission office and the visa application centre in Sylhet amid heightened tensions following recent protests in the city. A Dhaka court has granted a second four-day remand for the wife, brother-in-law, and a female friend of Faisal Karim Masud (alias Rahul Daud), the prime suspect in the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. The remanded suspects are Faisal’s wife, Saheda Parvin Samia, his brother-in-law, Wahid Ahmed Shipu, and his friend, Maria Akter Lima. Initially filed as an attempted murder case, it has now been converted into a regular murder case under relevant sections of the Penal Code following his death. Investigators believe the assassination was part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to sabotage the upcoming election and instill fear among candidates. The Inqilab Mancha issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government for the arrest of Hadi's killers, after thousands of people gathered at Dhaka's Shahbagh intersection this Saturday afternoon following the funeral prayers for Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha and one of the key leaders of the July mass uprising. After Osman Hadi's burial on Saturday afternoon, Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of the organization, took position at Shahbagh intersection and stated that if no response comes from the government regarding the arrest of Sharif Osman Hadi's killers by 5:15pm on Sunday, they will stage another sit-in at Shahbagh. Earlier, people began gathering at Shahbagh intersection from around 3:30pm onwards. Prior to this, Osman Hadi's funeral prayers were held at 2:30pm at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building. After the funeral prayers concluded, he was buried beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam near the Dhaka University Central Mosque.
