Tatchell, a veteran human rights campaigner best known for his LGBTQ advocacy, was detained as he attended a pro-Palestinian demonstration which featured attendees marching through central London, according to his foundation. "The police claimed the word intifada is unlawful. The word intifada is not a crime in law. Tatchell had posted on X a photograph of himself on the protest route carrying a placard with several different slogans on them including "Globalise the intifada".

"We are encouraged by this meeting that Russia is working toward securing peace in Ukraine," he added. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and White House Senior Advisor Josh Gruenbaum also attended the talks, he said. Dmitriev, Russian President Vladimir Putin's top economic envoy, met Witkoff and Kushner in January on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He also held talks with US negotiators on Ukraine in a visit to Miami in December.

KYIV, Ukraine, Feb 1, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Ukraine's power grid experienced mass outages for several hours on Saturday after a "technical malfunction" caused electrical lines between Moldova, Romania and Ukraine to fail, Ukraine's energy minister said. By Saturday evening, the power companies had restored power to all regions of Kyiv, said Ukraine's Energy Minister Denys Shmygal. Shmygal said on Telegram that a "technical malfunction" caused "a simultaneous shutdown of the 400-kilovolt line between the power grids of Romania and Moldova and the 750-kilovolt line between western and central Ukraine" had caused the shutdown. Moldova produces its own power but also imports some, mainly from Romania, as well as Ukraine. The incident piles further pressure on Ukraine's energy grid, which was already in a fragile state due to weeks of intense Russian bombardment.

At least four people have been killed and 509 others injured in 64 incidents of election-related violence across Bangladesh in January, according to rights group Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF). In December, MSF recorded seven election-related violent incidents nationwide, which left one person dead and 27 injured, bdnews24.com reports. In its monthly human rights situation monitoring report sent to the media on Saturday, the last day of January, MSF said election violence emerged as one of the “most severe” human rights crises during the month. Beyond election-related clashes, the organisation reported 24 incidents of political violence in January, in which 215 people were injured. A murder case has been filed two days after the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader during clashes between supporters of rival political parties in Sherpur. More than 700 people have been named as accused in the case, including a BNP candidate contesting the Sherpur-3 parliamentary seat. According to police, the case names BNP nominee Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel and 234 leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations. Following his death, Jamaat held a protest rally in Sherpur town on Friday, attended by leaders and activists of the party and its allies. Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman is expected to visit Sherpur on Sunday to pay his respects at Rezaur's grave and address an election rally, party officials said.
