DHAKA, Jan 31, 2026 (BSS) - The government has reduced fuel prices by Tk 2 per litre across the country. Under the revised rates, diesel will be sold at Tk 100 per litre, down from Tk 102. Octane prices have been reduced to Tk 120 from Tk 122 per litre, while petrol will now cost Tk 116 per litre instead of Tk 118. Kerosene prices have also been lowered to Tk 112 per litre from the previous Tk 114. According to the ministry, fuel prices in the country are adjusted automatically at the consumer level in line with fluctuations in the global market.

CUMILLA, Jan 31, 2026 (BSS)- A tragic road accident on the Dhaka-Chattogramhighway claimed the lives of a woman and her five-year-old child today. Police and witnesses said the accident occurred this morning when a Dhaka-bound bus ran over them in the Eliotganj area on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highwayhere. At that moment, a bus belonging to Nilachal Paribahan,coming from behind with high speed, ran them over on the spot. Meanwhile, the bus of the Nilachal Paribahan lost control over the steeringand crashed into a mini covered van parked beside the road. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Eliotganj Highway Police Station Ruhul Amin saidthe bus and the damaged covered van had been recovered and taken to thepolice station.

Organized by the Science and Technology Department of the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU), the workshop took place from 3:00 pm at the Senate Building. Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Khan attended the event as the chief guest while Treasurer Professor Matiar Rahman, Acting Registrar Professor Iftikharul Alam Masud, RUCSU Treasurer Professor Md. Students, researchers and information technology personnel from various departments of the university participated in the workshop. Held with the cooperation of the RU Science Club, the workshop began with a welcome address by RUCSU Science and Technology Secretary Tofael Ahmed Tofa, while Assistant Science and Technology Secretary Mujahidul Islam Saim conducted the session.

Sarba Mitra Chakma, a Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) executive member who has faced criticism over a series of controversies, has withdrawn his decision to resign.Speaking to bdnews24.com on Saturday afternoon, Sarba Mitra said students had urged him not to step down, describing his resignation as "anti-student" and a betrayal of those who elected him. "They told me not to listen to the opposition and to continue my work. So I have decided to withdraw my resignation," he said.Sarba Mitra also claimed the DUCSU constitution does not support resignation, though he admitted he could not specify which provision states this. "I don't know exactly which clauses talk about resignation," he said when asked.However, Clause 12(b) of the DUCSU constitution states that if any executive member or office-bearer resigns, dies or is removed, the vacant post must be filled through the prescribed election process for the remainder of the term.On Thursday afternoon, Sarba Mitra had told bdnews24.com that he would resign after completing some pending work within two days.Elected last year as an executive member from a Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel, Sarba Mitra announced his resignation decision in a Facebook post on Monday amid growing criticism. Speaking on the occasion, Zainal Abedin said late Begum Zia was an extraordinary and illustrious woman of the century. The main objective of the exhibition is to present the life, struggles, and political contributions of national leader Begum Khaleda Zia to the new generation. The exhibition showcased various chapters of Begum Khaleda Zia's long and eventful life and political journey-from an ordinary housewife to entering politics and serving as Prime Minister three times. In addition, more than a hundred rare photographs from different periods of her family and political life were displayed, along with screening a special documentary based on her life and political struggles.

Some 458,000 Bangladesh expatriates have so far cast their voters through the postal ballots in the upcoming referendum and the national election scheduled for February 12 next. The Election Commission has already received as many as 144,860 returned ballots as of Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the Commission has sent some 518,603 ballots to different destinations under the In-Country Postal Voting (ICPV) since the distribution of the postal ballots started on Monday last. Among the ballots, only 7,367 ones have so far been received by the registered voters and 4,902 voters cast their votes. The Commission also is using the new postal balloting system for the government employees working outside their respective constituencies, the polling personnel and the people under legal custody inside Bangladesh.
