Protesting students at Bangladesh Agricultural University have presented an ultimatum to push for a six-point list of demands, including an apology from Vice Chancellor Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan over an attack by outsiders. An emergency syndicate meeting that night closed the university indefinitely and ordered students to vacate residential halls by 9am on Monday. Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus is meeting with a delegation from the Jamaat-e-Islami on the upcoming elections and current affairs. The meeting began at Yunus’s official residence, the State Guest House Jamuna, around 4:30pm on Sunday, the Chief Advisor’s Office said. The other members of the delegation are Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan and former MP Hamidur Rahman Azad. The chief advisor will also hold separate meetings with the BNP and National Citizen Party (NCP) today. The BNP meeting had originally been scheduled for 3pm.

The government has extended the tenure of the commission formed to investigate the Bangladesh Army jet crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara. According to a notification, the tenure of the commission, and the deadline for submitting its report have been extended until Sept 23. On Jul 21, a fighter jet crashed into Milestone School and College in Uttara’s Diabari, killing and injuring many, mostly children. Six days later, on Jul 27, the government formed a nine-member inquiry commission, headed by former secretary AKM Zafar Ullah Khan, to determine the cause of the crash, assign responsibility, and assess damages. The commission was initially asked to submit its report within four weeks.

A report by Northeast News has alleged that three senior figures in Sheikh Hasina’s government were “subverted” by the American “deep state” and acted in ways that weakened the Awami League regime ahead of its fall on Aug 5, 2024. Unnamed Awami League insiders told Northeast News that the trio acted in ways that “harmed the interests” of the Hasina government. Gulshan Police Station chief Hafizur Rahman said the body of the 50-year-old Terrence Arvelle Jackson was recovered from his hotel room on Sunday afternoon, reports bdnews24.com. The American embassy in Dhaka later took custody of the body without a postmortem after confirming natural causes of death, he added. An embassy doctor examined the body before it was taken into embassy custody. Investigators from CID, PBI and other units also visited the scene.

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has been declared closed indefinitely following an attack by alleged outsiders to free the vice-chancellor and around 200 teachers and officials who had been confined by protesting students. Students have been ordered to vacate their residential halls by 9am Monday, said Proctor Professor Abdul Alim. He added that the emergency syndicate meeting, held online at 9:30pm Sunday, decided to shut the university “until further notice". Despite a referendum among students, the university authorities have yet to take a final decision. At least 10 people, including students and journalists, were injured in the incident.

A survey has found that 41.9 per cent of students in Bangladesh’s higher education institutions face different forms of discrimination on campus. Among those affected, 51 per cent were female students and 49 per cent were male. It shows that 56 per cent of public university students, 19 per cent of private university students, and 5 per cent of medical college students reported facing discrimination. Around 23 per cent faced discrimination due to financial reasons, 29 per cent due to body image, and 30 per cent due to political differences.
