A 59-year-old man was arrested in relation to abusive social media messages sent to England defender Jess Carter during the women's European Championship last month, Cheshire Police said on Thursday. During Euro 2025, Carter said she had been the target of online racist abuse in Switzerland and even announced that she was stepping away from social media for the duration of the tournament, which England won by beating Spain on penalties in the final. The 27-year-old, who is Black, struggled in England's quarter-final win over Sweden as the Lionesses conceded two first-half goals, after which she was targeted. "Following the reports an investigation was launched by the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU), working in partnership with social media companies to identify the people responsible," Cheshire Police said in a statement. Carter received support from far and wide, including her teammates, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European soccer's governing body UEFA, her club Gotham FC and the National Women's Soccer League.

The Advisory Council has given in-principle approval to the draft Enforced Disappearance Prevention, and Redress Ordinance 2025, which prescribes the death penalty as the maximum punishment for enforced disappearance and abduction. Speaking at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said: “The ordinance on enforced disappearances was placed before the council [on Thursday] and has received policy approval. It will undergo further discussion before final approval.”According to him, Bangladesh became a signatory to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance on Aug 29 last year at the United Nations General Assembly. The draft ordinance has been prepared in alignment with that convention, and with the aim of enforcing the constitutional rights to life and personal liberty. The ordinance defines enforced disappearance as a criminal act and includes death penalty provisions.

Salman F Rahman, former advisor to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has been shown arrested in four cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of embezzling bank funds through irregularities and corruption. Prosecutor Mohammad Hafizur Rahman said the commission filed the cases against Salman this year. One case accuses him of taking a loan of Tk 4.96 billion in the name of a fake company, while another alleges he embezzled Tk 340 million and laundered Tk 763.9 million. Following the July Uprising, Salman was arrested from the Sadarghat area of Dhaka on Aug 13, 2024. Salman was later remanded in several cases tied to the mass uprising.

Engineering students protesting at Shahbagh over different demands have withdrawn from the streets after DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali apologised for police baton charges on their rally earlier in the day. Following his departure, the students announced their next course of action and left Shahbagh by 10:45pm, vowing not to stage programmes that disrupt public life. As part of a string of demonstrations over their demands, students of engineering universities, led by BUET, blocked Shahbagh intersection from 11am on Wednesday.
