Of all the free agents getting invitations to play for the Detroit Red Wings in this month’s NHL Rookie Tournament, forward Israel Mianscum just may be the most curiously interesting prospect. From the Cree community of Mistissini in northern Quebec, left-winger Mianscum was an attendee at Detroit’s summer development camp. “It was very fun, I had a good experience,” Mianscum told Celina Wapachee of CBC.ca. Last summer, Mianscum was in attendance at the development camp of the Montreal Canadiens. “He is one of the players I’ve seen progress the most in my coaching career in Sherbrooke,” Julien told CBC.ca.

Housing Minister John Lohr said since then, the government has received five applications, three of which have been approved so far. Housing Minister John Lohr said 50 homeowners did show interest in securing a modular home when the program first started, but the process can be complicated. A spokesperson with the province said those who were displaced who require financial support or rent supplements should contact the Canadian Red Cross for assistance. Still, Lohr said he expects more people will start applying for the modular homes soon. Lohr said once the modular homes are no longer needed, they will be repurposed elsewhere.

The city-owned site now proposed for affordable housing is currently occupied by the LAZ parking lot, a block that is bounded by Seventh, Eighth and Island Avenues and Market Street. The downtown San Diego site once destined to become a luxury five-star hotel could be transformed into more than 400 units of affordable housing under a proposal favored by city officials for the publicly owned parcel. The proposal by the longtime affordable housing developer was one of four the city received in response to a solicitation in May for redeveloping the downtown site. At the very least, those bidding on the site were required to set aside 25 percent of their proposed units as affordable. A key factor in Chelsea’s favor, Bibler said, was that it crafted a proposal that best met the city’s goal of maximizing affordable housing by providing the most units affordable to lower-income households.

Hudson County Clerk Junior Maldonado has been elected president of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, a group of about 7,000 Latino officeholders from across the U.S. He replaces Lubby Navarro, who resigned her seat on the Miami-Dade County Public School Board of Education last year after Florida passed a law that banned elected officials from also being lobbyists. A former Jersey City councilman and U.S. Navy veteran, Maldonado is serving his second term as county clerk. He is the first person of Puerto Rican descent to hold a countywide constitutional office in New Jersey. “I am honored and elated to have been elected to lead NALEO for this approaching term,” stated Maldonado.

A lawsuit filed on behalf of a former student and former employee at the University of Minnesota accuses the university of not doing enough to protect personal information from a recent data breach. Attorneys for the two plaintiffs said in the lawsuit filed in federal court Friday that the university “was fully capable of preventing” the breach, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Wednesday. The university declined comment on the lawsuit but spokesperson Jake Ricker told the newspaper in an email that the safety and privacy of everyone in the university community is a top priority. The report said the hacker gained access to the university’s data warehouse to analyze the effects of affirmative action following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling limiting the consideration of race in college admissions. The lawsuit accuses the university of violating the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.

metro-strike-0830-ph2Metro Inc. has reached a tentative deal with the union representing 3,700 workers who walked off the job from more than two dozen stores in the Toronto area a month ago. If workers ratify the deal, it will end a strike that has shut down 27 stores and for a time blocked Metro’s meat and produce deliveries around the province. Unifor, the union representing the workers, said members will vote on the deal on Aug. 31 at noon at a Toronto convention centre. In a major escalation of the strike, Unifor on Aug. 23. started a round-the-clock blockade of Metro’s two west-end Toronto warehouses that specialize in perishable food. Unifor said it wouldn’t reveal the terms of its new tentative agreement until the deal is presented to members.

On Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. PT, Japan initiated the release of radioactive water from a nuclear power plant managed by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), more than a decade after the facility sustained catastrophic damage. On March 11, 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi plant was devastated by a massive magnitude 9.0 earthquake that triggered powerful tsunami waves, resulting in the meltdowns of three of its reactors. This incident stands as one of the most severe nuclear catastrophes in world history. The plant operator has indicated it will release the water in small quantities, with a number of safety checks in place. The initial release totalling 7,800 cubic metres (equivalent to about three Olympic-sized swimming pools), will occur over a span of approximately 17 days.

OTTAWA – Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said building a brand-new official residence would be the least of his concerns if he becomes prime minister. Poilievre was asked during a press conference in Oshawa what he would do with the official residence if he forms government but hinted he would not care the least to deal with this file. “We don’t need a new home for the prime minister. Poilievre has also had an official residence of his own since becoming leader of the official opposition, nearly a year ago. The state of Canada’s official residence for the prime minister has been making headlines for years and has garnered international media attention – not for the right reasons.
