Conservative Party members are pressing their leader to adopt a number of controversial policy positions including private health care, scrapping Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies and abandoning the party's previous position to stay out of the abortion debate. One proposal that will be considered in breakout-room workshops at the party convention would axe that referral requirement. For the third time in just three months, Wabush Airport faced disrupted service and that has Labrador MP Philip Earle saying enough is enough. In October, most of the Wabush Airport services shut down briefly because a federal agency changed the airport's designation so it requires firefighting services — services Transport Canada cut five years ago. Statistics Canada says a boost in the number of people looking for work in December drove the unemployment rate higher at the end of the year. Canada created just 8,200 new jobs in December, while the unemployment rate rose to 6.8 per cent, up from 6.5 per cent the month before. December's job gains were concentrated in full-time work, which added 50,200 jobs in December, while part-time ‍employment fell ⁠by 42,000. Douglas Porter, BMO's chief economist, said the December figures bring job gains back to a more "realistic place."
