A woman in her 90s is dead after she was found outside her seniors' residence on Jan. 1, in Lac-au-Saumon, in Quebec’s Lower Saint-Lawrence region. She was a resident at Domaine Lac-au-Saumon, a private seniors' residence. Provincial police say the woman was found outside in critical condition at 8:00 a.m. and emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate her. Provincial police say an investigation is underway to understand the circumstances of the event and an autopsy will be performed. Lepage, who is also head nurse at the facility, told Radio-Canada that the woman lived in the autonomous wing of the residence for almost two years.

Fox Carney appeared alongside her husband while he was on the campaign trail; however, she has largely stayed out of the spotlight since Carney became prime minister in March 2025. Fox Carney was tasked with officially dropping the puck in a matchup game between Sweden and Switzerland, said MP Mike Kelloway in a Facebook post about the event, held at The Kehoe Forum. Kelloway also posted photos from the event, including a picture of himself posing with Fox Carney alongside the university’s president, David Dingwall. Fox Carney was photographed speaking to the girls on the ice and played a scrimmage game with them, Cape Breton Post reported.

Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to China next week, marking the first visit to the country by a Canadian prime minister since 2017. Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with the premiers in Ottawa later this month, the start of a busy year where the mandatory review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico-Agreement (CUSMA) kicks into high gear. The prime minister and the premiers have been meeting periodically, often virtually, over the last year in the shadow of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war. Trump's tariffs continue to punish Canadian sectors including the steel, aluminum and auto industries and spur economic uncertainty. Those talks are expected to intensify this year with the CUSMA review in full swing. Carney's meeting with the premiers falls just days after Parliament returns.

Software company Ubisoft has closed its Halifax studio, putting 71 staff members out of work. In late December, 60 workers at the Halifax studio formed the company's first union in North America. T.J. Gillis worked at Ubisoft Halifax for five years. Gillis noted with the Halifax studio closure, there are no more employment options for game developers in the province.
