Ramalingam told the court that he would hand over $2,000 in cash for the Labour Market Impact Assessment and $400 for rent.

Software company Ubisoft has closed its Halifax studio, putting 71 staff members out of work. In late December, 60 workers at the Halifax studio formed the company's first union in North America. T.J. Gillis worked at Ubisoft Halifax for five years. Gillis noted with the Halifax studio closure, there are no more employment options for game developers in the province. "This was my first serious foray into the gaming industry," Gillis said.

Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to China next week, marking the first visit to the country by a Canadian prime minister since 2017. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said the trip from Jan. 13 to 17 will see Carney meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss trade, energy, agriculture and international security. Carney met Xi on the margins of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, South Korea, in October, where he accepted Xi's invitation for a visit. In response, China imposed a 76 per cent tariff on Canadian canola seed imports and a 100 per cent tariff on canola oil, meal and peas. China also put a 25 per cent tariff on certain Canadian pork, fish and seafood products.

A mountain gorilla has given birth to twins in war-ravaged eastern Congo, a national park announced on Wednesday, in what it described as "a major event" for the endangered subspecies. Spanning more than 7,700 square kilometres, Africa's oldest national park is home to many of the world's last mountain gorillas, yet much of the park is under rebel control and fighting has accelerated forest loss. Caring for twins can be challenging, "particularly during the early months when infants are entirely dependent on their mother for care and transport," the park's statement said. An evacuation order was lifted on Wednesday evening after a live explosive device was reported in an area of downtown Sydney, N.S., earlier in the day. "The explosive device was safely disposed of by the military's explosive disposal unit. Evacuations have been lifted and the area has reopened to public access," Cape Breton Regional Police said in a news release sent at 6:20 p.m. AT. Darren Barrington, police were called to 153 Pitt St. at around 7:30 a.m. after a live grenade was found inside a business. “When the police arrived on site, they entered the building and they found what appeared to be an explosive device sitting on the floor,” Barrington said in an interview with CBC Radio’s Mainstreet Cape Breton.
