Meanwhile, several Canadian oil and gas companies are taking a hit to their stock price. The Toronto Stock Exchange's energy index was down about 4.5 per cent by midday Monday. Shares of the largest oil and gas companies in the country are trading lower, including Suncor Energy at about four per cent, while Cenovus Energy and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. dropped about seven per cent. Though stocks of Canadian energy companies are down, Schwartz said it’s likely an overreaction, noting it will likely take years to rebuild Venezuela’s energy sector infrastructure before production could noticeably increase. The weekend removal of President Nicolas Maduro is impacting oil markets, because the country has some of the largest oil reserves around the world.

The challenge will be attracting major investment dollars from U.S. companies — no small feat considering the "monumental" amount required to fix Venezuela's broken oil industry, says Commodity Context oil analyst Rory Johnston. In the short term, more oil from Venezuela could be exported to the U.S. Gulf Coast instead of other foreign markets. If the U.S. does succeed in redirecting Venezuelan oil toward the Gulf Coast, China would presumably need to find barrels from another country. On Monday, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith emphasized that point, describing the urgency of building oil pipelines to export Canadian oil to new markets. Canada's oil production remains at record levels, but political turmoil is a variable that always weighs on — or boosts — oil prices, and that's unlikely to change in 2026.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he's not worried about the prospect of increased oil production from Venezuela challenging Canada's energy exports because Canadian oil is cheaper, cleaner and lower-risk. That makes Canadian oil competitive for the medium and long term, he added. After launching military strikes against Venezuela and arresting Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, Trump said U.S. oil companies would go into the country, fix the oil infrastructure and oversee the industry.
