In a few years, and specifically with the launch of the 2017 Women's Year, Egypt witnessed fundamental changes into the conditions of women in general and Upper Egypt women in particular. The report reviews the most important axes for women's empowerment in Upper Egypt. Some governorates in Upper Egypt still need some interventions to raise the proportion of women's representation in leadership positions, according to the nature of each governorate. CAIRO - 6 January 2022: A recent fire in a factory in Amman, Jordan, has killed three Egyptians and injured four, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Thursday. Two of the injured are in a critical condition and are receiving treatment, the ministry said. One of the other two injured left hospital as he only suffered minor injuries while the other is in a stable condition but still receives treatment, the ministry added. The Egyptian consul in Amman headed to Al-Bashir Hospital, where the victims were hospitalized, to follow up on the health condition of the injured and ensure that they receive the best medical care. A fire broke out in a factory in Al-Muwaqqar, Amman, on Monday 2 January.

The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) has received a letter of intent from Compass Capital to submit a non-binding purchase offer on the shares of Pachin. In a statement to the Egyptian Exchange, the FRA stated that Compass Capital aims to acquire a stake of no less than 51% and up to 90% of the targeted company’s capital in order to maintain its listing on the Egyptian Exchange. It added that the bidder set the initial price of the share at EGP 30, provided that the final price is determined based on the results of the due diligence examination of the target company. Eagle Chemicals set the initial price for the acquisition of Pachin shares at EGP 29.5 per share. Last November, the Emirati National Paints Holding Company submitted an offer to acquire Pachin at a price of EGP 29 per share.

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has announced that the size of microfinance offered by banks and financial institutions increased to EGP 64.6bn for 4.5 million beneficiaries in June 2022, compared to EGP 6.4bn in December 2016. It also pledged EGP 2bn to the credit risk guarantee company to cover part of the risks associated with financing SMEs. In addition, the CBE said that banks operating in the Egyptian market pumped financing worth EGP 48.3bn to about 436,900 customers within the framework of the real estate financing initiative for low and middle-income individuals until the end of September 2022. CAIRO - 5 January 2023: Egypt announces that the second phase of trainings held for pharmacists to rationalize the use of antibiotics has begun, and will last for two weeks, starting from January 1. At least 10 people were killed and seven others wounded in twin bombings suspected to have been carried out by al-Shabab in the central Somalia town of Mahas early Wednesday, a regional government official and witnesses confirmed. The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced on Tuesday evening that its net international reserves increased to $34.003bn in December 2022, compared to $33.532bn in November 2022, a growth of about $468m. It is the largest increase in Egypt’s international reserves since August. It is also the fourth consecutive increase in reserves, bringing the total rise to $860m from September to December. According to the Central Bank’s website, the value of gold listed in its international reserves increased to $7.326bn, compared to $7.078bn in November 2022, an increase of $248m. Egypt’s foreign reserves consist of a basket of major international currencies, including the US dollar, the euro, the pound sterling, the Japanese yen, and the Chinese yuan.

CAIRO - 4 January 2023: Egypt's Population has reached on Sunday 104.395 million people inside the country, according to what was announced by the population clock of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), which is linked to the birth and death registration database at the Ministry of Health and Population. Last year, the population had reached (102.812 million people) on January 1st, 2022, and thus a population increase (the difference between the number of births and deaths) of 1.583 million people has been achieved during the period from 1/1/2022 to 1/1/2023 days. The slight increase in the number of births during the year 2022 compared to the year 2021, is evident from the development of the numbers of natural increase during the period (2018-2022). (249) births per hour, i.e. (4.15) births per minute, which means one birth every (14.4 seconds).
