The Minister of International Cooperation Rania al-Mashat signed development financing grants with the European Union worth €138 million. A €14 million grant for the “EU Green – EU Support for Growth through Egyptian Environmental Networks” program was also signed, and will be implemented through the GIZ, to support the Ministry of Environment. This is in addition to the €3 million grant for the Community Development Program between the EU and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) for the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA). Moreover, the disbursement of the second tranche was announced to support the budget, worth €80 million in grants to support the Ministry of Health and Population.

CAIRO - 9 May 2022: The implementation of a solar cell plant in Zafarana area to produce electricity with a capacity of 50 MW is underway, according to the New and Renewable Energy Authority. The Authority stated that the plant will start its operation in the third quarter of 2022, with total investments of about LE 700 million. This came in the Authority's eleventh periodic bulletin, which included a monitoring of renewable energy activities during the third quarter of the fiscal year (2022/2021), which shows the progress of work in the fields of hydro, solar, wind, and biomass. The capacities of the projects under development witnessed a remarkable increase, reaching 3,570 megawatts, with foreign direct investments of approximately $3.5 billion, double its counterpart in 2020. Of these, 78% are for wind energy projects in the Gulf of Suez region on the Red Sea coast with high wind speeds, and 22% for energy solar.

Colombo, Sri Lanka (CNN) – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on Monday, following weeks of protests against his government. The country has been rocked by civil unrest since March, with demonstrations at times turning violent as anger builds over the government’s apparent mishandling of Sri Lanka’s worst economic crisis since declaring independence from Britain in 1948. The restrictions were announced shortly before Rajapaksa announced his resignation. At least 80 people were admitted to the hospital following violence at the protests, Colombo National Hospital said. Armed troops have been deployed in Colombo, according to CNN team on the ground.

CAIRO – 9 May 2022: Geologist Abou Al Hagag Nasr El Din, who is member of the technical committee of the Golden Triangle, called Monday for the revival of the "Imperial Marble Quarry" located western Red Sea's Safaga town in the Eastern Desert. The geologist noted that the marble extracted from such quarry was labeled "imperial" because it was used in building the columns of the Greco-Roman castles and temples. Nasr El Din said that work at the quarry persisted for 100-150 years, but later, has been neglected for centuries. He noted that large reserves of the "imperial marble" still exist in the area lying just 45 kilometers away from Safaga, which has a seaport. In 2017, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi issued a decree turning the Golden Triangle, extending between Red Sea's Safaga and Qusair, and Qena's Qift, into an economic zone.

Minister of Awqaf (Endowments) Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa said during a televised interview on Saturday that the longest Friday sermon delivered by Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) was within 8-10 minutes. He stressed that those who wish to acquire more religious knowledge can attend the daily lessons, which are organized daily. He pointed out that the rest of the mosques will witness three lessons in the afternoon and three after the evening prayer, in addition to the lessons of female preachers after the noon prayer. He explained that the Holy Quran memorization headquarters for women who are memorizers approved by the ministry will be opened after the noon prayer.

CAIRO – 8 May 2022: 20 Egyptian sailors, who were held in Yemen and then released, returned home on Sunday, reported the Egyptian state-owned news agency MENA. “Once they returned to Egypt, the sailors thanked President Sisi for his efforts to solve their issue,” MENA said. Six days ago, the Egyptian authorities announced that they succeeded in releasing 20 Egyptian sailors held in Yemen, and secured their return to their homeland. Their release was carried out upon President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi’s directions to the concerned agencies to exert all necessary efforts to set the sailors free. Sources told Egypt Today that the Egyptian sailors were fine and received the necessary health care.
