Ethiopia attracted USD 3.82 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) during the recently concluded fiscal year, according to the Ethiopian Investment Commission. Ethiopian Investment Commissioner Hanna Arayaselassie highlighted efforts to improve the business climate, promote investment, facilitate activities, provide one-stop services, and work on regulations as key areas of focus during the fiscal year. These efforts resulted in USD 3.82 billion in FDI, representing 80% of the target and an 11.5% increase from the previous year. Hanna mentioned the commission's participation in 10 international forums and exhibitions, as well as organizing nine high-level investment forums in Ethiopia, to promote the country’s untapped investment opportunities. For the current fiscal year 2024/25, priorities include implementing recently approved regulations, improving logistics and investment incentives, and enhancing investment promotion through digitalization, with a target to increase FDI inflow to USD 4.52 billion.

(Bloomberg) -- Ethiopia’s official creditors have granted financing assurances to the country to help fast-track approval of a new loan by the International Monetary Fund’s executive board, according to people familiar with the matter. Financing assurances mean that bilateral creditors such as the Paris Club and China provided certainty that they will restructure their loans to Ethiopia in a way that’s consistent with the fund’s program. Creditor countries usually provide financing assurances after a staff-level agreement on a new program is publicly announced by the Washington-based IMF. The assurances are required per IMF rules for a loan to be approved by the fund’s executive board and kick off the disbursements. An IMF spokesman said that fund has made progress with Ethiopian authorities and development partners on a program, without commenting on financing assurances or a staff-level agreement.

Addis Ababa July 18/2024( ENA) Ethiopia has signed a Host Country Agreement with the UN to host the first preparatory session for the fourth International Conference on Financing for Development which will be held in Addis Ababa from July 22-26, 2024. Ambassador Tesfaye Yilma, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the United Nations while Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs inked the agreement representing the UN. The Under-Secretary-General on his part appreciated Ethiopia's commitment and role in hosting the UN preparatory Conference on Financing for Development. Both underscored the importance of the conference in setting the right tone to galvanize the international community to mobilize finance for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and for Sustainable Development.
