CEO of the Ethiopian News Agency, Seife Deribe for his part said that the MoU will serve as a model to strengthen cooperation among the BRICS countries. “Today’s MoU will have a great contribution to enhance the media coverage for both media houses and BRICS media countries. TV BRICS CEO, Janna Tolstikova on her part said the media cooperation signed between ENA and TV BRICS will contribute to bolstering the bilateral relationship between Ethiopia and Russia. Recall that the Ethiopian News Agency had inked MoUs with the BRICS member countries media houses including the Russian News Agency Sputnik and the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Twelve people were killed Monday in central Somalia as government soldiers and local militias fought over two truckloads of weapons illegally brought over the border from Ethiopia. The local militias overpowered government forces after receiving reinforcements from clansmen, the official added. The Somali government did not disclose the quantity of the weapons but the security official told VOA Somali that the weapons were two truckloads and included DshK and PKM machine guns, AK-47 assault rifles, pistols and ammunition. The government appealed to local residents and elders for help in returning the weapons to government hands. The Somali government has been attempting to reassert control of the country from armed militias and al-Shabab militants.

ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Thursday he was expecting about $10.5 billion in financial aid in the coming years once the country wraps up negotiations with international lending institutions. Africa’s second most populous nation, battered in recent years by several armed conflicts, the Covid pandemic, and climate shocks, has been engaged in drawn-out talks seeking to secure a support programme from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). There has been speculation that Ethiopia may have to devalue its currency, the birr, as a condition of IMF aid. “We have been negotiating with the IMF and World Bank on a wide range of issues,” Abiy said in an address to parliament, adding that both Ethiopia and the IMF “are stubborn.” “Several of our proposals were finally accepted,” he said. “When this process comes to a successful conclusion, and the reform is approved, we will receive $10.5 billion in the coming years.”
