Addis Abeba — Last week, multiple districts in Amhara region were struck by renewed heavy artillery shelling and drone strike, resulting in the tragic loss of civilian lives and the destruction of vital infrastructures. Witnesses speaking to Addis Standard reported that the indiscriminate attacks caused widespread devastation to homes and infrastructure in the region. The explosion killed five individuals, including Henok Shume, and left the vehicle reduced to scattered debris. Despite being constructed four decades ago, the bridge remained in good condition until it endured the recent damage, as stated by Gashaw. In November, the United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said drone strikes by Ethiopian government forces in the Amhara region including on a school and a bus station resulted in the deaths of at least 20 civilians, raising concerns about human rights abuses amidst ongoing clashes in Amhara.

Liam McNallyMelton council has stood by its decision not to grant an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church (EOTC) a permit to convert a Strathulloh property into a place of worship. The land sits in a Green Wedge Zone which allows for places of worship to be built on a discretionary basis, decided by the council. EOTC committee member Endalkachew Aragaw said church leaders were assured in 2021 that securing a permit would pose no significant challenges, which was crucial to their decision to purchase the land. Now-mayor Kathy Majdlik said allowing a church in a Green Wedge Zone would set a dangerous precedent, while councillor Goran Kesic said that many of the congregation’s members arrived in Australia as refugees fleeing conflict, and establishing a church in Melton would reflect the resilient and devout nature of the community. Councillor Steve Abboushi raised a motion to rescind the decision at the November 27 council meeting which was supported by councillors Sophie Ramsey and Goran Kesic.

“They attempted a coup and failed to materialise their objective,” Embalo said after members of the National Guard command improperly released two ministers detained over alleged corruption, resulting in a shootout with the Presidential Palace Battalion. Protesters at the COP28 climate talks in Dubai Monday called for additional financing for the newly established loss and damage fund, as well as an end to subsidies for the fossil fuel industry. Kenyan climate activist Eric Njuguna said he believed certain countries had not paid enough into the fund. "The message of this action today is that after the creation of the loss and damage fund on day one, Global North countries haven't paid enough into the loss and damage fund," he said. "We need the rich countries to pay into the loss and damage fund in the scale of hundreds of billions," he added. Meanwhile, Japanese activist Susanne Wong singled out her country for subsidizing modern fossil fuels across Asia.

The military leaders of Burkina Faso and Niger said Saturday they would quit the G5 anti-jihadist force in Africa's Sahel area, the latest blow to the fight against insurgents in one of the world's most troubled regions. The G5, created in 2014, has secured only meagre results, with Mali also quitting the original five-nation force last year, also in the wake of a military coup. Burkina and Niger "have decided in full sovereignty to quit all instances of the G5 Sahel, including the joint force" as of November 29, the two countries said in a statement. Worse, the legitimate ambitions of our countries, of making the G5 Sahel a zone of security and development, are hindered by institutional red tape from a previous era, which convinces us that our process of independence and dignity is not compatible with G5 participation in its current form," they said. .In a veiled reference to france, they added that "the g5 sahel cannot serve foreign interests to the detriments of our people, and even less the dictates of any power in the name of a partnership that treats them like children, denying the sovereignty of our peoples."

Everybody agrees there is enough food to feed the world but there is not enough agreement on how to go about feeding it. Outside the core issue of limiting global warming via the net-zero carbon push, the most important developments at Cop28 relate to food. The World Food Programme’s climate point man, Gernot Laganda, sat with me during Cop28 to run through just why this is important. Mr Laganda makes the point that a summit where leaders are making pledges day by day for strengthening food systems is a good thing. What we have on the table is a climate crisis and the resulting humanitarian crisis.
