(COLORADO SPRINGS) — This week, FOX21’s Morning News and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) are featuring Cinnamon, a nine-year-old Pit Bull mix that came into HSPPR as an owner surrender. Cinnamon still has a lot of energy for a senior but would probably do best in a home on the quieter side. She gets along well with other dogs but might prefer dogs on the calmer side. Registration is now open for Pawtoberfest, one of HSPPR’s biggest fundraisers of the year. Early bird pricing is available from now until August 14th at pawtoberfest.orgFor more information on Cinnamon, other pets looking for adoption, or how to volunteer, visit HSPPR’s website.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Some African leaders arrived in Russia on Wednesday for a summit with President Vladimir Putin while the Kremlin, seeking allies amid the fighting in Ukraine, accused the United States and other Western powers of “outrageous” efforts to pressure many other heads of states from attending. “Today, Africa is asserting itself more and more confidently as one of the poles of the emerging multipolar world,” Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin. Putin’s foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said that while only 17 heads of state will attend the summit, 32 other African countries will be represented by senior government officials or ambassadors. At the same time, Putin has repeatedly pledged that Russia would offer free grain to low-income African countries now that the Black Sea deal has been terminated. A peace proposal for Ukraine that African leaders have tried to pursue is set to be discussed as well.

"As long as we Ethiopians are considered 'black' within society – using the word 'black' as something negative is invalid," according to Balau. We must stop using the word 'black' as a derogatory term, and stop describing things like mourning and destruction with this color. Using the word 'black' as something negative creates insecurity among children." The word 'black' is used negatively and derogatorily, and if we compare it to the United States, I assume we would never see headlines with the words 'It's a black day' there."

Trucks loading fertilizer at the Djibouti port (Photo: Ministry of Transport and Logistics/Facebook)Addis Abeba – The Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics said, following a campaign launched last week, it has been able to transport more than 60 thousand metric tons of fertilizer from the Djibouti port only within three days between 21-23 July. Many were injured in the aftermath of gun shots fired by the police to disperse the large crowd, eyewitnesses told Addis Standard. But we have been told by the government that it has been distributed,” one farmer who took part in the protests said. “When we ask again and again, they tell us to wait, but we haven’t seen anything yet,” he added. How does it end up in their hands?” another farmer who took part in the protests asked.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) issued a statement on Monday calling on Ethiopian authorities to immediately release seven “arbitrarily detained” opposition figures. The seven detained individuals belong to the formerly banned Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). The seven OLF figures were arrested in 2020 and 2021. HRW points out the detention violates Ethiopian law as well as international law. The OLF claims to represent the Oromia region and Oromo people of Ethiopia.

Addis Ababa — Three members of the US Congress have written a letter urging Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen to impose sanctions on individuals responsible for human rights abuses in Western Tigray, in Ethiopia. Specifically, the Congress members are calling for visa blocking and financial asset control sanctions against Colonel Demeke Zewdu and Belay Ayalew, who have been identified by Human Rights Watch as central figures in ongoing arbitrary detention, torture, and ethnic cleansing in West Tigray. The members of Congress also underscored that human rights groups have documented ongoing human rights abuses by all parties involved in the conflict since it began in November 2020. Human Rights Watch has urged the federal government to suspend, investigate, and appropriately prosecute commanders and officials implicated in serious rights abuses. The government also accused HRW that it has chosen "a specific area and repeatedly prepared reports to achieve a different political mission under the guise of human rights agenda."

That is the essence of Zionism: Jews returning to their ancestral homeland after thousands of years of exile, and exercising the right to self-determination in the Jewish state. There, for the first time, I became immersed in the immigration stories of my Ethiopian colleagues, many of whom made aliyah during Operation Moses. I returned from Ethiopia inspired to share the story of Ethiopian aliyah with the rest of the world. And the more I researched, the more I realized how the story of Ethiopian aliyah to Israel, particularly Operations Moses and Solomon, has not been captured in an English-language novel. Kim Salzman is the author of “Straddling Black and White,” which is about the Ethiopian aliyah experience.

Air strikes and artillery barrages from Sudan's warring generals killed at least 16 people in a Khartoum neighborhood on Tuesday, a neighborhood group reported. After more than 100 days of war, the latest bombardments added to a toll of at least 3,900 killed nationwide. "Sixteen citizens died today in this senseless war" when shells hit civilian homes in the Ombada area of Khartoum's northwest, the neighborhood group said. It is one of many pro-democracy "resistance committees" that have cobbled together supplies over the patchy internet, land lines, or by risking their own lives to venture out since the war began. Mediators from the United States and Saudi Arabia have previously accused the RSF of "occupation of civilian homes, private businesses, and public buildings."
