The report which was published on Thursday said more than 204,000 battle-related deaths were recorded worldwide in active state-based conflicts during 2022, with the wars in Ethiopia and Ukraine accounting for 89% of the deaths. The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) estimates that about 81,500 battle-related deaths occurred because of the war in Ukraine, while 100,200 battle-related deaths resulted from the parallel war between the Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF” the report said. The report underlined that documenting war crimes and battle-related deaths in Ethiopia has been difficult, and “casualty figures should be understood as a conservative baseline”. It stated that 55 conflicts were recorded in 2022, eight of which crossed the 1,000 battle-related deaths threshold and were classified as wars including Ukraine and Ethiopia. In 2021, for the third consecutive year, the conflict with the most battle-related deaths occurred between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban.

Filagot Tadele, a palliative care nurse, spends her days crisscrossing Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, caring for cancer and HIV patients. This stems from a lack of training, with palliative care rarely featuring on medical school curricula, says Dr Yoseph Mamo, one of the handful of Ethiopian health professionals with palliative care expertise. The Ethiopian government has lifted its five-month-long ban on Facebook, Telegram, TikTok, and YouTube, allowing citizens unrestricted access to these social media platforms as of Wednesday. During the ban, citizens could only access these platforms through virtual private network (VPN) software, which incurred additional data costs. Amnesty International condemned the blockage, stating that it violated citizens' rights to freedom of expression and access to information. The Ethiopian authorities have previously implemented internet restrictions on multiple occasions in response to various social and political events. As the government eases the restrictions, citizens in Addis Ababa were observed freely accessing social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, without the need for VPNs.

In the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ethiopian remained one of the few airlines to have its planes operating the most — carrying out repatriation flights, cargo operations, among others. Ethiopian remains one of the few airlines that never reduced salaries of employees or sought a government bailout while others were crippling. A Boeing 737 Max 8 with a capacity of 144 in Economy Class and 16 in Business Class is used in the operation of these additional flights. Confusion over ET926 as a Morning or Night Flight? If there are any cancellations on the Accra-Addis Ababa route, it is most likely that they will affect the new flights.

During the shutdown in Ethiopia, the use of VPNs became a prevalent means for accessing the internet and social media.
