Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held the first phone conversation in the history of bilateral relations with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on 20 July. Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine had delivered nearly 300,000 tonnes of food to Ethiopia as part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and another 90,000 tonnes of grain as part of the Grain from Ukraine humanitarian initiative. "The voice of Ethiopia, the African Union, the whole of Africa is very important to us," Zelenskyy said. In his evening address, Zelenskyy also said that he had spoken to the Ethiopian Prime Minister about Russia's attempt to disrupt Ukraine’s grain exports. And by the way, we have already started preparing for the UN Security Council meeting scheduled for tomorrow, which is dedicated to this very issue, food security.

President Zelenskyy also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Abiy to visit Ukraine. According to the official website of the President of Ukraine, during the call, the leaders discussed Russia’s unilateral withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative, the illegal obstruction of maritime traffic, and the attacks on Ukraine’s port and energy infrastructure. This marked the first-ever phone conversation between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Zelenskyy. President Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine had already delivered nearly 300,000 tons of food to Ethiopia under the Black Sea Grain Initiative and an additional 90,000 tons of grain under the Grain from Ukraine Humanitarian Initiative.

Authorities in the western Ethiopian region of Gambella have imposed a night-time curfew after scores were killed in fresh violence. Sources in the regional capital, Gambella city, said businesses and offices were closed on Wednesday. The region, which borders South Sudan, has seen recurring violence in recent months. In May, at least seven were reportedly killed and more than a dozen wounded in clashes in Gambella city. Last year the city was raided by rebel fighters from neighbouring Oromia region with dozens killed.

On Monday, Russia declined to extend the Black Sea Initiative, a UN and Turkey-mediated arrangement with Ukraine, which allowed Kiev to export grain via its seaports. The Russian Defense Ministry further announced that starting on Thursday it would revoke security guarantees under the deal. The statement declared the Black Sea a “danger zone” for Russian and Russia-bound ships.
