Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah joined BJP on Sunday (February 22, 2026), a week after quitting the party he served for almost 33 years. State BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia welcomed Mr Borah, a two-time former MLA, at a programme organised at Vajpayee Bhawan, the party’s headquarters in Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Mr. Borah for “beginning a new life from today”. Mr. Borah was a secretary of All India Congress Committee before he was made the State Congress chief in July 2021. Reacting to the switchover, Mr. Gogoi said his party was suspicious of Mr. Borah working on behalf of BJP and leaking inside information.
