The centrality of nature and biodiversity to national security was made crystal clear in a UK government national security briefing on global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security. National security assessments are conducted to identify strategic risks, threats and vulnerabilities that threaten national interests. For the first time, biodiversity loss and global ecosystem collapse were systematically assessed through a national security lens. Food production was identified as both the most significant cause of terrestrial biodiversity loss and one of the sectors most vulnerable to ecosystem collapse due to biodiversity loss. Nature restoration, within and beyond our shores, is essential for mitigating the national security risks of biodiversity loss.

Sir, – Conflict is the single largest driver of food insecurity, forcing millions from their homes and cutting families off from land, markets and basic services. In 2022, the war in Ukraine triggered a global cost-of-living crisis, and food insecurity reached record levels. Without a rapid resolution, the conflict impacting Iran and the Gulf states could have a similar effect, potentially driving another 45 million people into acute food insecurity, and impacting food and fuel prices and the availability of fertilisers globally. Lasting peace is needed to reverse the steady increase in the number of people who are acutely food insecure. Without it, the systems that people depend upon for food will continue to unravel, and zero hunger will remain an aspiration.

Proposed changes to how consumers and businesses can challenge a Revenue tax assessment will have a chilling effect on such appeals, the Irish Tax Institute says. Photograph: Laura Hutton/RollingNews.ieChanges to how consumers and businesses can challenge a Revenue tax assessment will have a chilling effect on such appeals, the Irish Tax Institute says. It would punish a taxpayer in the court of public opinion for daring to contest a tax assessment, Anne Gunnell, director of tax policy and representations at the tax industry group, told an Oireachtas committee on Wednesday. The tax industry group says that judgment held only that an absolute ban on public hearings was unconstitutional – not that all meetings had to be held in public. The EU-wide comparison shows that although most countries default to public hearings, almost all anonymise published findings of those hearings.
