In the past few days, a small number of European troops have arrived in Greenland to bolster its defences. What appears likely is that European powers will offer concessions so that Trump appears to “win” for his domestic base. Europe seems likely to fare little better, revealed to be utterly dependent on the US and a distinct lack of principles for its members.

The future of dozens of Priceline Pharmacy outlets across the country remains in limbo after an 11th hour rescue deal for the largest franchisee collapsed. Retail group Wesfarmers placed 54 Infinity Pharmacy Group stores into receivership in December, with creditors owed more than $400million. The Australian conglomerate had considered bailing out Infinity Pharmacy Group with fresh equity, but abruptly pulled the plug a week before Christmas. Wesfarmers spent three years supporting Infinity Pharmacy Group before a 'breakdown of trust across all parts of the relationship' unfolded. Infinity Pharmacy employs 1,200 staff across almost 100 stores, mostly located in Queensland and NSW.

Alongside the Irish citizen, Venezuela freed Czech, Hungarian, Dutch and German citizens imprisoned in the country, according to a Reuters report. A plane carrying the freed citizens landed at Prague airport, where family members waited for their arrival. A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to The Irish Times it is “aware of the case” involving the Irish citizen and “provided consular assistance to the citizen involved”.

Forensic tests have also identified Mr Reid’s blood on a jacket owned by Shaw, the court heard. Mr Reid, who formerly lived in Scotland, died on January 12th. During Monday’s remand hearing, a police detective sergeant told the court she could connect the accused to the charge. Mr Reid staggered out of the flat a further eight minutes later, the court heard.

A Cork man will vie to come out on top in the new season of British TV series The Apprentice, which starts next week on BBC One. Breast cancer sufferer Ziva Cussen, who died aged 24 on Saturday, “bravely inspired” others through her campaign for better healthcare, her family have said. Ms Cussen was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer aged 21 in 2023. The other co-founders of Too Young to be Heard, Niamh Noonan and Muireann McColgan, shared tributes to Ms Cussen online. The late Ziva Cussen who was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer aged 21 in 2023. She had proactively gone to her GP in early 2023 with breast cancer concerns having found a very small lump.

Many hospitals are facing into yet another week of severe overcrowding with 448 patients suffering respiratory illness and hundreds of people in need of emergency care on trolleys. HSE figures showed 431 patients on trolleys across the country and another 811 having to be moved from emergency departments today to other areas of hospitals to reduce congestion. There were 115 people waiting over 24 hours for a bed this morning, including seven patients over 75. In an update the HSE said 448 people are currently hospitalised with respiratory illness including 279 with flu, 42 suffering from Covid, 127 diagnosed with RSV. Other hospitals under pressure include Tallaght University Hospital, Cork University Hospital, Galway University Hospital and Mayo University Hospital .
