The novel is set in New Ross in June 1963, as the town prepares for president JK Kennedy’s visit. Garda Jim Field feels responsibility for a troubled outcast named Patrick Hatten, living on the fringes of the community. It’s a fusion of interests of my own – Kennedy, that generation of men and women, the casualties of progress. I wrote the sort of novel I like to read – a small town, a sense of trouble lurking, with focus on atmosphere and place. Letting the reader know what Patrick is up to before Jim does helped to build tension.

When learning is delivered through platforms and devices, it becomes harder to see what children are actually being taught. If we are serious about promoting reading, we cannot ignore the contradiction of encouraging children to read at home while replacing books with screens in school. In that regard, you could do worse than follow “Hot Dudes Reading” on Instagram, and join their 1.3m followers.

Having earned rave reviews for her return to the stage, Lily Allen made the most of her tour success by partying with her 'West End gang' on Saturday. The singer, 40, has been touring the country performing her comeback album West End Girl, with songs inspired by her turbulent split from husband David Harbour. The couple's explosive split and allegations that David was unfaithful led to her penning the breakup album, West End Girl. West End Girl was critically acclaimed and reached #1 on the Official Album Downloads Chart, with the cover work going on display at the National Portrait Gallery. Nieves said she was 'overwhelmed' to have her artwork displayed in the National Portrait Gallery, and she felt 'enormously fortunate' to be part of the West End Girl 'journey'.

I aspired to have fun in the beautiful, curvaceous new wing of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art – before my high heels began to hurt. Harris was upset about Altman’s new deal with the Pentagon to provide AI for classified use. I called him after the party to hear the whole drama – a classic story of art rebuking commerce. Amodei did not want his AI to be used for surveillance of Americans or to run autonomous weapons without human oversight. In a leaked memo to his staff, Amodei fumed that Altman was spinning, gaslighting and undercutting Anthropic.
