Despite their shared success at Old Trafford, the two strikers were known for their frosty relationship. Sheringham's arrival at Old Trafford in 1997 saw the pair's relationship deteriorate further. Cole recalled: "When he joined Man United, I remember sitting there and saying to myself, 'Oh my gosh, problems, problems.' "I heard that and so that was it for his duration at Manchester United and my duration at Manchester United. Gabon’s government have announced the suspension of the national team, the sacking of the coach and kicked Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang off the squad in the wake of three defeats at the Africa Cup of Nations finals. Gabon’s Minister of Sports announced on television the suspension of the national team after they finished last in their group and were eliminated from the tournament in Morocco. “Given the Panthers’ disgraceful performance at the Africa Cup of Nations, the government has decided to dissolve the coaching staff, suspend the national team until further notice, and exclude players Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang,” said acting sports minister Simplice-Desire Mamboula after Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to the Ivory Coast in Marrakech. Neither Aubameyang nor veteran defender Ecuele Manga played on Wednesday with Aubameyang having returned to his French club Olympique de Marseille for treatment on a thigh injury. Disbanding the national team used to be a common reaction in Africa to disappointing results but since world football’s governing body Fifa have taken a hard stance against government interference in the running of football associations, it has been a rare occurrence.

Cameras to detect and prosecute drivers who break red lights will be used for the first time in a decade with their installation at the Merrion Gates level crossing in Dublin in the new year. The automatic cameras will take pictures of drivers who fail to stop when the flashing red lights are showing at the level crossing. The cameras have been installed at the Merrion Gates level crossing as a safety collaboration between Iarnród Éireann, An Garda Síochána and Dublin City Council and will be operational from January. This level crossing was selected due to “traffic surveys showing persistent driver behaviour issues”, Iarnród Éireann spokesman Barry Kenny said. “The key issue at Merrion Gates is proceeding beyond a stop line when red lights are flashing,” he said.

As the Christmas spirit makes way for new year resolve, Claire Brock declares this “a time for giving back”. “You’re now staring at a pile of recyclables, I know you are,” the host remarks, slightly sternly but probably accurately. Meanwhile, goals of a more predictable variety are covered on Tuesday’s show when personal trainer Karl Henry shares tips on getting fit. Some of the documentaries are quirkily arresting – The Intangibles (RTÉ Radio 1, Tuesday) has producer Jim O’Donoghue Martin meeting people who maintain bygone traditions and crafts, such as letterpress printing and mummery – while others are more conventional, such as Rory McIlroy’s Holywood Ending (RTÉ Radio 1, Tuesday). Barry Lenihan, filling in as anchor of Drivetime (RTÉ Radio 1, weekdays), impishly alludes to the absence of regular hosts when opening the show: “No need to adjust the wireless.” But like Brock, Lenihan performs his role ably.

However, creating the new body was recommended by an independent review of the education system that concluded the year before Givan became Minister. The same review recommended conducting a separate review into the general school curriculum - the religious education curriculum is devised separately. He and they were clearly influenced by the reforms begun in 2010 in England under Conservative education minister Michael Gove.

Radio Éireann: the station came into its own with Éamon de Valera’s reply to Winston Churchill about Ireland’s neutrality. Six years later the new Irish Constitution was passed, and the new director of radio, TJ Kiernan, renamed the station Radio Éireann. Radio Éireann came into its own in 1945 with the celebrated reply by de Valera, as taoiseach, to Winston Churchill’s diatribe about Ireland’s neutrality. Irish company Sligo Pallets has terminated its sponsorship of the Irish Forest Rally Championship due to what the company's chief executive Andrew Mullen has termed "ongoing and unresolved communication issues with the Forestry Sub Commission." According to the regulations for the series, the "National Forest Rally Championship is promoted by Motorsport Ireland and the National Forestry Sub Commission." Long before he agreed to underpin the national forest series in 2023, Sligo Pallets supported high-profile drivers like Eugene Donnelly (five times Irish Tarmac champion, national rally champion and a former national forest rally champion) and Garry Jennings (Irish Tarmac champion).
