The return from injury of Brian O’Driscoll and Tommy Walsh will strengthen the Cork defence for this Saturday’s Division 2 tie at home to Kildare. Ian Maguire’s return from suspension, allied to the removal of Walsh and O’Driscoll from the injury list, means the Cork defence and midfield are likely to undergo notable personnel change for the Kildare game. It wasn't just on that match that we were focusing on, it was the whole season so far,” Cleary explained. A lot of our preparation was on Kildare and Tyrone, who are our next two games. Cork are due to host Limerick in the Munster quarter-final on April 12.
A consultancy team including Limerick senior coach Paul Kinnerk have said “a cultural shift” is required in Wexford. In a list of “take home messages”, clubs in Wexford are called on to raise their standards and objectives. “A cultural shift is needed: a mindset of ambition, standards, and shared accountability across every parish and team,” the plan reads before listing the other messages. A high-quality coach development programme is also to be established. “This is an exciting moment: a chance to align, modernise, and create a player and coaching culture that Wexford can be proud of for years to come,” said Kinnerk.
British Airways has pulled all services to five Middle Eastern destinations and Israel, citing 'instability' in regional airspace during the war. Qantas does not fly to the Middle East, but has a codeshare partnership with Emirates. Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific is also offering flights from Sydney to London for nearly $40,000 in April. More than 27,000 flights across the Middle East have been cancelled since the US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. US President Donald Trump has vowed the war is now 'pretty much' over, however time will only tell for those stranded in the Middle East as airspace instability continues.
Liverpool lose to Galatasaray in Istanbul in first leg of Champions League tieBy Simon Peach, Press Association Chief Football Writer, IstanbulArne Slot’s 100th match as Liverpool boss ended in defeat as Galatasaray capitalised on a sloppy display to win the first leg of this Champions League last-16 tie 1-0 on a deafening evening in Istanbul. The Premier League champions arrived in Turkey hoping to kick-start a disappointing second season under the Dutchman, only to return home reeling from their second loss of the campaign at rocking Rams Park. Liverpool, just like in September’s league phase encounter, fell to a 1-0 defeat at Galatasaray, where the VAR’s intervention, sloppy play and poor decisions meant Mario Lemina’s early goal secured the hosts a first leg advantage. The midfielder headed home as Slot’s side were caught napping at a corner seven minutes into a frantic, end-to-end first half that saw Florian Wirtz waste chances before and after the opener. The defender thought he had equalised, only for the VAR to adjudged he had handled to Liverpool trailing heading into next Wednesday’s second leg at Anfield.
Champions League: Atletico Madrid 5 Tottenham 2Tottenham's Champions League campaign is all but over after Antonin Kinsky's error-strewn display proved the catalyst for a punishing 5-2 loss at Atletico Madrid to heighten scrutiny on Igor Tudor. Tudor hinted he may experiment for the last-16 first leg given Premier League survival was the priority, but his decision to play 22-year-old goalkeeper Kinsky backfired in spectacular fashion. This was Kinsky's first appearance since October, but before he took centre stage Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak fumbled a cross. Van de Ven passed back to Kinsky, who completely miscued his attempted pass and Alvarez walked the ball into the empty net. Spurs were fortunate Van de Ven avoided punishment for a crunching tackle on David Hancko and Llorente flashed wide before half-time.
The sealing of a person's sample was 'a safeguard' but 'not a golden bullet', senior counsel Philip Sheehan told the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Photograph: PA WireA ruling quashing a man’s drink-driving conviction over issues concerning the chain of custody of his blood sample is of “huge significance”, counsel for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has told the Supreme Court. The sealing of the sample was “a safeguard” but “not a golden bullet”, and a chain of custody evidence is necessary, he said. The statutory presumptions did not extend to the Garda chain of evidence and the sample which grounded the certificate had not been “authenticated”, he said. Judge Iseult O’Malley remarked that counsel’s client had the necessary evidence himself because he had a container with half of his blood sample.
Pep Guardiola has urged his Manchester City team to have the courage to stick to their own identity when they meet Real Madrid in their Champions League last-16 first leg tie in the Estadio Bernabeu on Wednesday evening. It should also be pointed out that familiarity appears to breed contempt among the fans: the match is not even a sell-out. Erling Haaland in training before Manchester City flew to Spain for the crucial game‘The Newcastle game defined who we are. I want to deserve to be in the next round and the only thing is to be who you are. It sounded very much like the talk he may deliver to his side before they walk out in the Bernabeu’s cauldron.

Champions League: Newcastle 1 Barcelona 1ALAN Shearer predicted goals and Tino Asprilla came to see them but they were kept waiting until a late flurry left Newcastle with work to do in the Catalan capital next week. Newcastle United's Harvey Barnes (centre) celebrates scoring their side's first goal of the game with teammates. Newcastle continued to be guided with hearts rather than heads and were guilty of getting regularly caught out by Barcelona's well-drilled offside trap to prematurely halt promising situations. Osula put himself about well, and narrowly failed to reach an inviting Anthony Elanga centre across the face of goal in a late flourish to a half where Newcastle noticeably faded. Robert Lewandowski was anonymous for more than an hour, but he almost remedied that as the final 20 minutes approached.
Later this month the Central Bank will launch a commemorative Seán O’Casey coin to mark the centenary of the playwright’s most enduring work, The Plough and the Stars. But the purpose of such coins is “to celebrate figures of national importance and to commemorate significant events in Irish history”. O’Casey and the Abbey directors stood their ground in the face of accusations he was “making a mockery” of a revolutionary movement. The controversy in 1926 was a reminder that holding a mirror to your country can generate as much condemnation as gratitude. There is still work to be done to ensure the scheme provides the continuity and security artists need to thrive.
Det Garda Eamonn Cunnane took a judicial review after An Garda Síochána refused to classify his sickness as a work-related injury. Det Garda Eamonn Cunnane took a judicial review after An Garda Síochána refused to classify his sickness as a work-related injury, resulting in what the detective claims was an unfair reduction in his salary. At the High Court on Tuesday, Cunnane’s barrister, Sarah Cooney, successfully applied for a direction from Judge Mary Rose Gearty to order the Garda Commissioner to file opposition papers within three weeks or risk the matter being heard without any defence. Cooney said Cunnane took his action against the Garda Commissioner over a decision last July confirming the refusal of his application for an “injury on duty” claim under Garda Code 11.37. The detective submits that he voluntarily brought investigating members to his neighbour’s home and the bike was recovered.

The man, who has no previous convictions, acknowledges the verdicts but continues to protest his innocence, defence counsel Brian McInerney said. The defendant followed her and suggested that they go skinny-dipping “like it was a game”, the complainant told the court. Sentencing the man, Judge Jonathan Dunphy paid tribute to the complainants, whose statements he described as “honest, courageous and brave”.
