When Ireland’s first national broadcaster crackled into life on New Year’s Day in 1926, the State itself was barely out of infancy. 2RN, later Radio Éireann and eventually RTÉ, was never just a technological novelty. In 1947, he declared: “Irish broadcasting is the everyday story of the new Ireland, spoken with its own voice." From the outset, Irish broadcasting carried a burden few other media institutions faced. She is organising From Broadcast to Podcast, a two-day conference at UCC on January 29 and 30 celebrating 100 years of Irish radio.

If you are an employer, you may need to register for auto-enrolment ahead of January 1. Auto-enrolment is a new scheme designed to ensure that most employees who do not currently have access to an employer pension scheme will be contributing toward their own personal pension fund. In simple terms, if you have employees who are not covered by any pension scheme or contributions, you need to determine whether auto-enrolment is required. With only a few weeks to go, employers may wish to consider setting up a private employer scheme as an alternative. There are very limited investment options under the auto-enrolment scheme, whereas the choices for a private pension arrangement offer massively more choice (albeit that does not necessarily mean a greater return).

‌One of the biggest culture shocks she had when she first moved to the UK was over an odd bedroom detail. I'd use the pillowcases, but pillows in the UK are longer, so they just pop out of the case." Molly brought her US butter dish with her because she loved the design, but found she couldn't use it in the UK - as our butter comes in a different shape. UK butter is a thick block that, while rectangular, isn't far off a square. One person said: "I'm sorry, what do you mean the pillows and butter and ovens are different sizes?!"

Technology developed in Donegal is helping to provide clean drinking water in Uganda and could be rolled out to other countries next year. Since 2019, researchers at the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in Letterkenny have been working on a smart sensor to detect faults in the handpumps being used in boreholes in rural Uganda. Mr Morris of Atlantic Technological University has helped install the water pump project in Uganda (Handout/PA)Many communities in rural areas rely on handpumps to retrieve clean water from boreholes. The small solar-powered device monitors the water volume, number of strokes on the pump handle and its lateral movement. The WiSER lab specialises in developing technology using The Internet of Things.

Rewind to the 64th minute of the 2023 All-Ireland final. O’Neill was responsible for half the 0-10 total, and this despite starting almost as many games as he was subbed on in. O’Neill reflects on a surreal Saturday afternoon in Croker and the factors that may have fed into a demise nobody saw coming. “A number of things maybe. And maybe we were sub-par, so probably just a combination of everything, maybe the Munster final took it out of us too.

‌Liverpool invested £449million in the summer in a recruitment drive that saw them break the British-record transfer fee twice within a matter of weeks. ‌It left Slot with an embarrassment of riches as Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giovanni Leoni also became Liverpool players. An impressive early start soon faltered and the Reds lost six out of seven games and slid out of title contention. But Slot insists the longer the players have together and the more time he gets to work with them - the better they will be. ‌"History has shown many times the longer players play together the bigger chance you have of winning something.

Australia’s social media ban for children aged under 16 is a “great idea” but the “execution is not”, says New South Wales resident and mother Belinda O’Dea. She emphasises it is an “account ban” rather than a total social media ban, bringing its own problems. Many parents who have not grown up with social media do not have enough oversight of their children’s usage, O’Dea says. He also hopes it will reduce the hours of time schools have to spend on social media bullying cases. Will Australia’s social media ban for children come to Ireland?

All eligible forest owners can apply for a €1,200 grant aid per management plan under the existing Forestry Programme 2023-2027. Forest management plans are a requirement for forest certification.

Picture: Kyle McBurnie / Project CETIThis is the remit of a developing field of scientific research called ‘Non-human Animal Communication Technologies’ or ‘NACT’. This is one of several recent findings revealing just how complex vocal communication in non‑human animals can be. Grappling with the risks, an interdisciplinary team in New York University has developed a set of principles to guide the ethics Non-human Animal Communication Technologies. It presents opportunities for restructuring our relationships with the non-human animal world and might even bring us closer to a less destructive and more harmonious co-existence.
