Former Waterford TD and minister Brian O'Shea has died at the age of 81. The Labour Party TD and former national school teacher died peacefully in the care of the staff of Killure Bridge Nursing Home, "surrounded by his loving family". Mr O'Shea, who was from Tramore, served as a TD for Waterford from 1989 until 2011, and as a senator for three years prior to his election to the Dáil. Damien Martyn says he is ‘on the mend’ a month after the Australian cricket great was admitted to a Gold Coast hospital fighting for his life. The former Test batsman, 54, fell ill on Boxing Day and was rushed to hospital. The life-threatening illness causes an infection and swelling of the protective membranes that surround the brain. Martyn revealed that he was given a 50 per cent chance to live, but responded ‘exceptionally well’ to treatment. The Dublin senator Mary Fitzpatrick, who proposed the motion, argued strongly for a complete ban on scramblers from Irish roads.
