The US has written off more than $1.1 billion of Somalia’s debt, signalling Mogadishu’s continued wins in the international arena. Richard H. Riley, the US ambassador to Somalia, said the debt relief was worth $1.14 billion and was a strong sign of US commitment to Somalia’s future. In March 2024, the Paris Club, a coalition of creditor nations, announced the cancellation of about $2 billion in debt, which followed the IMF and World Bank’s announcement of debt relief for 99 percent of Somalia’s debt. Debt relief was initially conditional on improvements in State institutions and data collection to adequately measure the health of the economy and tame wastage. Dr Hussein Ali Ahmed, a Mogadishu-based economist, told The EastAfrican: “To beat all these socio-economic ailments, debt relief must be complemented by strong national reforms.”

Many had hoped that after his removal from office, Gachagua would go ballistic on the Kenya Kwanza government and his boss. In his carefully worded words, Gachagua has signalled a political comeback and told his supporters to wait for his signal ahead of 2027. In his congratulatory message to US President-Elect Donald Trump, Gachagua appeared to suggest that like Trump who made a historic comeback to the White House. “Congratulations, President Donald Trump, for one of the greatest political comebacks of our generation,” Gachagua stated. Political analyst Alexander Nyamboga said Gachagua is cleverly scheming for a political comeback without being seen to fight President Ruto's government directly.

Biden struggled to match this enthusiasm with substantial deals and partnerships, Mr Moore says, but that does not mean his Africa strategy was fruitless. During his previous administration, Trump said the scheme would not be renewed when it expires in 2025. In 2018 the Trump administration unveiled Prosper Africa - an initiative that assists US companies wanting to invest in Africa - and the Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which funds development projects in Africa and around the world. In his first term, Trump introduced measures that curbed immigration from several African countries, including Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan and Tanzania. "I'm really doubtful that the Trump administration is going to care more about what's happening in Sudan than, say, the Biden administration did."

Most economists think policymakers at the Bank of England will opt to reduce interest rates to 4.75% on Thursday. UK Interest rates (PA Graphics/PA)Andrew Goodwin, chief UK economist for Oxford Economics, said the outcome of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting “looks virtually certain”, although some members could still opt for rates to be kept the same. “But it does question our long-held view that rate cuts will speed up from now on. This could prompt policymakers to keep interest rates higher for longer, with knock-on implications for monetary policy in the UK. The US Federal Reserve will also announce the nation’s interest rate on Thursday, with financial markets also betting on a 0.25 percentage point reduction.
