Police in Lamu are investigating the murder of a village administrator by unknown gunmen on Sunday night. Fredrick Ngugi, 70, a Nyumba Kumi official was shot dead by a gang of men who raided his homestead at Malamande village in Hindi division of Lamu county at around 7.30pm. “I heard the shot at around 7.30pm and dared not go out but it was clearly from his home. Leanne Pero, from London, criticised larger cancer organisations for not providing enough support to minority ethnic groups after being made an MBE at Windsor Castle. Religious extremism or religious movements with a cultic flavour are not new in Kenya. As far as religious extremism is concerned, Kenya’s focus has been on Islamic extremism, including what constitutes “terrorism”. Preventive measures can therefore be designed to address not just Islamist extremism but all forms of religious extremism. I would place the Shakahola cult deaths within the narrow confines of cultism and religiously inspired violent extremism.
