[Screen grab]Private hospitals are exploiting foreign doctors on low wages while excluding Kenyan medics who understand labour law, Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has revealed. At the same time, over 4,000 Kenyan doctors remain unemployed despite the country producing between 1,000 and 1,300 graduates annually. Atellah said private hospitals refuse to offer internship placements, despite operating under the same framework as public facilities. Career stagnation, he noted, is driving doctors out of the public sector, with more than half of trained Kenyan doctors now working abroad. Duale said that over 200 licences held by foreign doctors had already been revoked as part of this ongoing exercise.

Lawyer Danstan Omari Photo Danstan OmariAccording to the lawyer, the doctors have also been facing a series of problems in the country. Their grievances followed Duale’s orders, which gave Kenyan-trained health professionals priority in licensing and employment before foreign doctors and other health practitioners, a move that was supported by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU). However, Duale's orders exempted practitioners from the EAC member states, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to regional integration and mutual recognition agreements.
