Earlier this week, I came across an interesting conversation on social media that was started by Kamau James Waweru. He wanted to know why chamas made up of cousins rarely succeed, no matter how many times they are revived. It is a subject I touched on sometime back, though I specifically focused on the gradual death of extended family get-togethers. Giving reasons why this was so, many say that this coming apart was due to the fact that they had inherited their parents’ grudges, which were mostly pegged on land, though the term, ‘the curse of inherited land’ would be apt. There was also talk of well-off families that looked down on their poorer cousins and wanted little to do with them.

As the country slept on the night of Thursday, October 17, staff of impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua did not have a calm evening. Mr Gachagua, like other elected or appointed top state officials, came in with a coterie of advisers whose contracts are tied to his tenure. Officers of the Presidential Escort Unit at the residence were scaled down following gazettement of Mr Gachagua’s removal from office. Civil servants were busy getting the office ready for the expected change of guard while those hired when Mr Gachagua assumed office carted away personal items. In keeping with the expiry of their contracts, some 108 employees attached to Mr Gachagua were sent on compulsory leave.

“You have to reflect a certain kind of man to dominate in politics - you can't show weakness or vulnerability,” says Oxford University associate professor in African politics, Miles Tendi, of the pomp and secrecy that surrounds African leaders and their health. Political leaders, in Africa and beyond, are expected to be symbols of strength and resilience. Over the years, various African leaders have met questions about their ailing health with either silence or anger. Cameroon’s former President Ahmadou Ahidjo is believed to be the only African leader to resign due to ill health, in 1982, after ruling for 22 years. More than 20 African leaders have died in office, some without telling their country they were even unwell.
