While the alleged perpetrator remains in custody and awaiting to appear in court, the case has already been marred by controversy. The report corroborated with the first report obtained at a local clinic in the Matadi community, where she was first taken. Margibi County—Prominent stakeholders of Margibi County have voiced their disapproval of the President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate (Senator, Grand Bassa County) Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence’s recent decision to reportedly revert the earlier appointments of Margibi County local officials made by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai. Boakai on April 23, 2024, nominated several sons and daughters of Margibi County to complete the county local administration nominations including the County Development Officer, County Administrative Officer, County Finance Officer, City Mayors, Districts, and Township Commissioners, among many others. The move has ignited widespread anger and frustration among local residents and leaders who perceive it as unwarranted interference in Margibi County’s affairs. Pro-Tempore Karnga-Lawrence who hails from Grand Bassa County has faced backlash for what many see as overstepping her boundaries by intervening in the governance of Margibi County. The Patriotic Rescuers of Margibi therefore thank the President, His Excellency Joseph N. Boakai for nominating these bright minds to spearhead the activities of the local government of Margibi County”.

President Joseph Boakai continues to face criticism after announcing that his government has procured 285 pieces of earthmoving equipment here. However, concerns persist whether the procurement adheres to the Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC) procedures. Mr. Boakai believes that investments in road construction and agriculture, for which these earth-moving equipment are being procured, can help alleviate poverty here. Senator Senator Amara Konneh wrote: "I am glad to see the Boakai Administration making bold moves toward road construction and rural development." Further, the Gbarpolu County Senator suggested that each unit's minimum price is about $100K, setting the total above $30 million.

As the audit unfolds, it is incumbent on President Boakai to look beyond the immediate issue of resolving the alleged financial irregularities. A broader vision is needed – one of a Central Bank led by a Governor who is eminently qualified and free from political machinations. The Liberian public urges President Boakai to endorse an independent selection process for the next Governor, ideally facilitated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The initiation of this audit by President Boakai is already a step in the right direction. President Boakai, the time to act is now.

“We welcome the much talked-about 285 earth-moving (road) equipment being negotiated by the Executive, after which the Legislature will have to conclude by ratification or rejection … where necessary,” he added. “When did they know that criticism and a demand for transparency are two different things? The criticism that paved their way to office is “showboating and grandstanding,” Senator Konneh said. What is it about attaining power?”“Stop being an intolerant leader of first resort by objecting to dissenting views while you are in power. Be consistent in your advocacy for good governance as an opposition and a ruling politician,” he added.

Monrovia – When then-President George Weah announced in May 2019 that Nathaniel Patray, the tough-talking Executive Governor of the Central Bank, was stepping down due to age-related issues, it sent shockwaves through the public and the banking sector. Little did the public know that under Governor Patray’s watch, the Central Bank of Liberia disbursed US$730,000 to major government institutions between August 2019. Governor Patray’s resignation in October 2019, following the former President’s request, marked a crucial turning point for the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL),” the bank said. The investigation, conducted by risk consultancy Kroll, confirmed that no banknotes went missing and that the new banknotes totaling 15.5 billion Liberian dollars ($96 million) were delivered to the Central Bank’s vaults. However, the embassy said the Kroll report raised concerns about the accuracy of the central bank’s internal records, identifying systemic weaknesses and longstanding shortcomings in Liberia’s fiscal and monetary management processes.
