MONROVIA – The Liberian Senate on Tuesday found Agriculture Minister Jeanine Cooper guilty of contempt of the Legislature. She was accused by the Senate Agriculture Committee of impending its legislative functions through a non-corporative posture. They reached the decision through a majority vote of 10 for; five Senators voted against the decision and four abstained. “Whenever duly cited, the Ministry of Agriculture represented by myself, when I am in the country or in my absence, the Acting Minister will appear along with relevant documents to answer queries. Plenary’s contempt charge was triggered by a communication written by Margibi County Senator Jim W. Tornonlah, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, alleging that the Agriculture Minister and her deputies were putting up a noncompliant posture to the Committee; thereby impeding the work of the Senate.

MONROVIA – Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has expressed regrets and disappointment over the poor state and lack of economic and infrastructural developments in Bomi which once immensely contributed to the country’s national budget over the years. Though former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives Alex Tyler hailed from Bomi, citizens and residents of the county continue to suffer from the lack of basic social services. Monrovia – Approximately 100 students at the 72nd Public School have benefitted from Leading Youths to Foster Transformation in Africa’s (LYFT-Africa) back-to-school donation that it is presently carrying on. On Tuesday, November 9, students at the 72nd Public School in Paynesville were seen in a jubilant mood receiving back-to-school donations from LYFT Africa, a youth organization in their community. Last October 2021, the external walls of their campus were painted by volunteers of LYFT Africa including J. The school is the only public school in the 72nd Community and it accommodates hundreds of vulnerable children and youths whose parents can barely afford to facilitate their education at private schools. Approximately 100 students at the 72nd Public school each received the back-to-school package, which included half-dozen copybooks, four pens, four pencils, two sharpeners and two erasers.

Dubai, November 28, 2021: Liberia is set to “rise and shine” at the Dubai expo 2020, says Ambassador Julie Endee, who heads the country’s team of cultural and musical artists attending the world event. Endee says Liberia’s participation is “not about dancing and music” alone. Instead, it will be “making a statement about who we are as a people and what we bring to the table”. The periodic world fair, taking place this year in Dubai, the UAE, runs from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. Tuesday, November 30, has been set aside as “Liberia Day” at the Expo.

MONROVIA – The National Identification Registry (NIR) has launched a pilot project that will allow for issuance of national identification cards to Liberians living in communities along our border with the Republic of Sierra Leone. That meeting was chaired by the Mano River Union Secretary General, Ambassador Medina A. Wesseh. The Government of Sierra Leone was represented by Hon. Mohammed Massaquoi, Director General of Sierra Leone’s National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA). WASHINGTON – The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) completed the third review under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF). Completion of the third review enables the immediate disbursement of SDR 17 million (US$23.64 million), bringing total disbursements under the arrangement to SDR 68 million (US$94.8 million). On August 23, 2021, Liberia received SDR 247.7 million (US$345.3 million) in the context of the general SDR allocation to the IMF’s membership. Fiscal reforms should focus on containing wage bill, enhancing domestic revenue mobilization, improving the quality of public spending, and operationalizing a Treasury Single Account. It will be important to accelerate structural reforms to improve the business climate for private sector development.”

LFA 3rd division club, Stages FC, has termed as “delay tactics” the Liberia Football Association’s (LFA) prayer for excuse and postponement of a court conference that was scheduled for Wednesday, November 24, at the Monrovia City Court. GIZ has trained several national stakeholders to counter the movement of illicit minerals, terrorist financing and money laundering, as well as illicit financial flows, within the Artisanal Smallscale Miners sector of Liberia. The joint training of national stakeholders is part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) due diligence guidance for responsible minerals supply chains and EU conflict minerals regulations, terrorist financing, money laundering, and illicit financial flows. The issue of smuggling of gold and diamond was high on the discussion, with emphasis on how to handle the movement of those minerals before it falls into the hands of terrorists. Liberia is a mineral-rich country, especially gold and diamond, but the proliferation of mining activities, coupled with illicit mining has made most of the minerals to be smuggled out of the country. This EU-funded training, which is being implemented by GIZ, was held in partnership with Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), LIS, LNP, German Corporation, and the Mano River Union (MRU).

The preparation for his fight was difficult because there was little material from his opponent Wilber Blanco Martinez from Colombia, who was unbeaten in eight fights. Still, Freddy Kiwitt showed that he was perfectly adjusted to his opponent. Kiwitt, who won 19 times in 22 fights, made short work of his three years younger opponent.
