DERNA, Libya (AP) — Libyan authorities limited access to the flooded city of Derna on Friday to make it easier for searchers to dig through the mud and hollowed-out buildings for the more than 10,000 people still missing and presumed dead following a disaster that has already claimed more than 11,000 lives. Aid groups called on authorities to facilitate their access to the city so they can distribute badly needed food, clean water and medical supplies to survivors. DERNA, Libya — The center of the eastern city of Derna is like one big graveyard — a mass of flattened buildings, wrecked lives and upended vehicles amid torn trees. From where I’m standing, at least three huge bridges in the city center are leveled. The sheer numbers of people dead or unaccounted for in the Libyan city of Derna are overwhelming survivors. Sky NewsA few hours after daybreak and there are small groups of civilians, some with just pickaxes, trampling over the boulders and rubble left in Derna center in the wake of Storm Daniel. The steaming heat has meant the corpses they’re finding are putrid after almost a week of decomposing.

“The biggest concern now is the contaminated water... Water supply in the city is dependent on wells underground. Most of the wells have been covered in mud, damaged or contaminated with sewage," Othman says. "There were no instructions asking people to remain in their homes, except areas where they were not in the way of the water." He adds: “I heard people say the dams were not being maintained... This storm is unprecedented... the amount of water exceeded 450mm in a very short time.”

On Monday, Storm Daniel unfurled across eastern Libya, affecting most of the region but especially the areas of Al Bayda, Al Marj and Derna. Storm Daniel caused more than 400mm — or 16 inches — of rain in just 24 hours, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

"It was like hell," said Rashad Ezzat Abdel-Hamid, a 45-year-old Egyptian who survived the disaster. Around him, people were wailing and crying, looking for their loved ones and trying to retrieve those under the rubble. He had gone there only six months ago.Egyptians have for decades gravitated to oil-rich Libya for work. Village homes face date palms groves and the fields are green with clover, corn and other grains. His father was building it for him, adding a third floor to the family home.Abdel-Fattah's three nephews also died in Derna.

International aid continues to arrive in Libya as the country continues to struggle after floods killed thousands and left people in the city of Derna homeless. The biggest concern for the country’s authorities is now the contamination of the cities’ water sources. “The biggest concern now is the contaminated water... water supply in the city is dependent on wells underground. United Nations Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths said it was "a massive reminder of climate and its presence". The group left Malta on Tuesday, to assist the country following the catastrophic flooding which has left thousands dead and missing.

Ashraf Sadawy Abdel-Fattah saw a list on social media with names of Egyptians killed in the horrific flooding that tore through the city of Derna in neighboring Libya on Sunday night. At least 74 men from the village, some as young as 17, were killed when Mediterranean storm Daniel unleashed heavy rainfall on Derna on Sunday night. More than 11,300 people were reported killed, according to the Libyan Red Crescent — including scores of Egyptians who had lived and worked in Derna for years. Libyan authorities say that so far, bodies of 145 Egyptians killed in Derna have been found. In Nazlet el-Sharif, 167 kilometers (103 miles) from Cairo, 74 village men were buried in a mass funeral on Wednesday attended by local officials and hundreds of villagers.

BERLIN, Sept 15 (MENA) – Two German Air Force cargo planes took off from a military airfield near the city of Wunsdorf to deliver 30 tons of humanitarian aid to Libya, the German Ministry of Defense said in a statement“The humanitarian aid shipment weighing 30 tons includes tents, cots, blankets, sleeping mats and electric generators. The total volume is 151 cubic meters,” the ministry said. The German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development will also allocate €4 million to the needs of Libyans affected by the floods.

The United Nations is urgently seeking more than $71 million to assist those most in need after deadly flash floods swept Libya over the weekend. Hurricane-strength Storm Daniel slammed into Libya on September 10, killing at least 4,000 people, with thousands more still missing. In a flash appeal Thursday, the United Nations Humanitarian Agency (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) said it expects the toll to rise. The city of Derna, one of the hardest-hit locations, was reduced to a wasteland after two upstream dams burst Sunday. Whole families, taken by surprise, were swept away in the deluge of water,” he said in a statement.
