On 18 August, the NGO said that a group of some 110 people were in danger in Malta’s Search and Rescue zone after shots were fired by a vessel flying a Libyan flag. Contact with the boat was lost soon after they informed Alarm Phone about the shots fired. Later on that evening, Alarm Phone contacted the Greek coastguard, who said that they could not reach the distressed but that Malta was handling the situation. On 20 August, relatives of the people on board contacted Alarm Phone and told the NGO that they feared that the persons on board the boat had been abducted to Libya and are being held in a military prison in Benghazi.

The Anti-Illegal Migration Agency in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, deported 456 irregular immigrants who hold Egyptian and Nigerian nationalities to their countries on Monday. This came in statements by the GNU Minister of Interior, Emad Trabelsi, to journalists, including the Anadolu news agency correspondent, while he was at the headquarters of the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency in Tripoli. Trabelsi said, “Our presence today is to supervise the deportation of some irregular migrants to their countries, in cooperation with all security services.”“Migrants must be treated in a humane manner, and this requires more wisdom,” he added. Trabelsi added, “Today, the Anti-Illegal Migration Agency deported 294 illegal migrants holding Egyptian nationality and returned them to their countries for entering Libyan territory illegally, in coordination with the relevant authorities in Egypt.”He confirmed that 162 irregular migrants holding Nigerian citizenship were deported, including 102 who were arrested at the Libyan-Tunisian border during the past few days while trying to enter Libya. For two weeks, African migrants suffered very difficult humanitarian conditions on the Tunisian-Libyan border, after they were expelled from their homes following clashes with Tunisians in the Sfax governorate (south) over the killing of a Tunisian youth by African migrants.

NEW DELHI: Following sustained efforts by the MEA and Indian embassy in Tunis, a group of 17 Indian nationals from Punjab and Haryana was successfully evacuated from Libya to India, government sources said.The Indians were being held captive by an armed group in Zwara City in Libya after they were trafficked from India. After some intervention by the Indian embassy in Tunis and senior MEA officials from New Delhi, the Libyan authorities agreed to release them. "During their stay in Libya, our Embassy looked after the needs of the Indians, including providing essential food items, medicines and clothes. Tickets for return to India were also provided and paid for by the Indian Embassy. The stranded Indian nationals reached New Delhi on the evening of 20 August 2023," said the source.

A group of 17 Indian nationals from Punjab and Haryana, held captive in Libya for months, were successfully evacuated to India on Sunday following long winding talks between the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Libyan government, sources have said. “The Indians were being held captive by an armed group in Zwara City in Libya after they were trafficked from India. While the Libyan authorities were able to rescue the Indian nationals on June 13, they kept them in their custody as they had illegally entered the country. In March this year, 12 men, mostly from Punjab, were rescued by the MEA from Libya where they were made to perform forced labour. Tickets for return to India were also provided and paid for by the Indian Embassy,” he added.

17 Indian victims of human trafficking rescued from armed gang in Libya; brought home by MEASeventeen Indian nationals trapped by an armed gang in Libya have been rescued and brought back home by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), it was reported today. Following the appeal of the families of the Indian victims, the Indian embassy in Tunis pursued the matter with Libyan authorities throughout May and June, as well as through informal channels. On June 13, the Libyan authorities rescued the Indian nationals from the armed gang, but still kept them in official custody, since the Indians had illegally entered Libya. Once the 17 people were released, they were taken care of by the Indian embassy in Tunis — they were given accommodation, clothing, food, and flight tickets. Since the rescued people had no passports, the Indian authorities facilitated their travel back to India by issuing emergency certificates.
