The Mayor of Benghazi, Sager Bujwari, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, Marc-André Franche, inaugurated today the newly rehabilitated Civil Society Centre in Benghazi. About 12 Sudanese are believed to be dead while dozens are missing when their overloaded boat sank in the Mediterranean off the Libyan coast, the Sudan Tribune reported on Monday. Citing a Sudanese aid worker, the Sudan Tribune stated that 95 Sudanese migrants and 10 others from African countries used a rubber boat last Tuesday at dawn in the Al-Alous neighbourhood of Khoms seeking to cross the sea to Europe. He added some survivors were arrested and transferred to a centre for illegal migrants in Khoms, about 150 kilometres east of the capital, Tripoli. A survivor died of hypothermia after their transfer to the refugee centre, the Sudanese humanitarian worker disclosed. He pointed out that seven boats loaded with illegal migrants attempted to cross to Europe from Libya during the winter session.

A car thief will be sentenced next week after he pleaded guilty to stealing a classic car and furniture from a residence, as well as stealing three other vehicles from a showroom. Abdulsalam Salem Ben Hamed, 50, from Libya was arraigned on Monday evening before magistrate Gabriella Vella, accused of the aggravated theft of furniture and a Morris Minor from a villa in Msida in January. Ben Hamed was also charged with the aggravated theft of three cars from a showroom in Hamrun, in February. The man pleaded guilty to these charges, and others relating to breaching a probation order and recidivism. Presiding Magistrate Gabriella Vella will be sentencing the man on February 27.
