The first voyage for passengers from the port of Tripoli to the commercial port of Zarzis in southern Tunisia docked on Monday. Other sea lines will follow with the Tunisian ports of Sfax and Goutlette, announced Libyan transportation minister Mohamed Shahubi to The Libya Herald. The Tripoli terminal, Al-Shaab, had been closed for over 11 years. The inauguration of the new passenger line for Zarzis is part of a larger plan to increase and improve connections between the two countries, the minister said, stressing that in the future other lines will be added to neighbouring countries.

“Chocolate Egg,” which is currently playing in Libya’s western city of Misrata, is a dark comedy play that sheds light on the officials’ exploitation of the Libyan youth who are part of armed formations that uses them in their political and financial games. Playwright Abdel Wahhab Haddad told Al-Monitor that the idea behind his play came from military parades that are frequently seen in Libya. But the director chose to name it 'Chocolate Egg' because of its recurrence throughout the play. The director is using the chocolate egg and the toy found inside the egg to point at the disdain and exploitation [of the leaders] on the one hand, and naivety [of the youth] on the other." The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Monday that 400 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya in the past week. “In the period of 5 – 11 Feb 2023, 400 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya,” IOM said in a statement. So far this year, a total of 1,965 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya, while 34 died and 32 others went missing off the Libyan coast, IOM revealed. In 2022, a total of 24,684 migrants were rescued and returned to Libya,IOM pointed out, adding that 529 migrants died and 848 others went missing off the Libyan coast on the Central Mediterranean route.

Minister of Health in the Government of National Unity of Libya (GUN), Ramadan Abujanah, has discussed with his Jordanian counterpart, Firas al Hawari, the activation of training programs for operators in the health sector. This was reported by the press office of the Libyan Ministry of Health, stating that the two sides met on the sidelines of the Forum of Experts of the Arab Council for Health Specializations, which was held in Jordan on Sunday. The meeting focused on the strengthening of joint cooperation between Libya and Jordan in the health sector and ways to activate training programs for operators in the sector.

Greek consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi will start receiving Schengen visa applications as of February 12, the authorities have revealed. Greece’s Ambassador to Libya, Stravos Venizelos, confirmed to the Libyan media that Schengen visas at this consulate will start to be processed from Benghazi. According to Schengen Statistics, a total of 295,634 applications for uniform visas were recorded in the country, while the total uniform visas issued, including MEV, went to 269,287. In addition, 239,711 multiple entry uniform visas (MEVs) were issued, with the total LTVs issued reaching 5,549 and 18,545 uniform visas not issued. In addition, the total ATVs and uniform visas issued reached 149,904 for Russian applicants while the total ATVs and uniform visas not issued peaked at 3,857.

The Ministry of Labour and Rehabilitation signed an agreement with Al-Madar Al-Jadeed Mobile Phone Company in Tripoli on Thursday to create a specific mobile phone bundle, the ‘‘Wafed’’ (Expatriate Package), for foreign workers. The ministry said this comes within its policy to organise and create a database of the expatriate labour market in Libya. This applies to contracted foreign workers entering Libya officially through border crossings. It is not meant for illegal migrant workers who enter Libya by crossing the desert surreptitiously. Through this digital platform, the Ministry of Labour says it aims to manage foreign labour affairs in an effective and flexible manner and monitor the number of expatriate workers in the country

ANKARA: The powerful twin earthquakes which hit southern Türkiye this week were three times stronger than the major 1999 Marmara earthquake in the country’s northwest, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday. The Erzincan quake in eastern Türkiye took some 33,000 lives, while the 1999 Marmara earthquake took some 18,000. Erdogan later visited Sanliurfa and said at least 21,848 people have been killed and 80,104 others injured since the twin earthquakes, centered in Kahramanmaras province, hit southern Türkiye on Monday. “Currently, 160,000 personnel are working in 10 provinces, together with teams from abroad,” said Erdogan, who also met with quake victims in Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa. At least 21,848 people were killed and more than 80,088 others injured by two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye on Monday, according to the latest official figures.

Belhaj, the former leader of the Libyan terrorist organization known as the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, spoke with Libyan TV channel Al-Masar during an interview which aired on Saturday evening. The 56-year-old proposed that “candidates of the political Islam movement” should not participate in the upcoming elections. According to Belhaj, the attempted forceful entry deepened the fracture between the divided military establishment in both the eastern and western Libya. Belhaj went on to reveal that maintains communication with military personnel in the Libyan scene, including the General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. “I have had contact with him several times and on more than one occasion,” adding that Haftar “has the right to present his visions and ideas.”

The Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, sent on Saturday tons of aid materials containing medicines and foodstuffs to both Syria and Turkey, to support the people affected by the earthquake that struck the two countries last Monday. In a statement on Saturday, the GNU confirmed the launching of the first air bridge flights to help the Syrian and Turkish peoples, explaining that the aids included tents, blankets, heaters and various foodstuffs.
