KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 26): Greatech Technology Bhd’s net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2022 (2QFY22) dropped 34.43% to RM25.17 million from RM38.38 million a year ago, due to the effects of prolonged supply chain constraints and cost escalation. Earnings per share (EPS) declined to 2.01 sen from 3.07 sen, as a result. According to Greatech, the current financial quarter’s margin was negatively impacted by the timing to turn production line systems (PLS) order bookings into revenue, due to extended supply chain constraints. For the first half ended June 30, 2022 (1HFY22), the group’s net profit lost 36.39% to RM54.1 million from RM85 million a year earlier, while its revenue diminished 4.86% to RM220.25 million from RM231.5 million. As of Aug 18, Greatech said its order book stood at RM506.67 million, which is expected to last until the 2HFY23.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 26): Axiata Group Bhd is planning to extend the tenure of some short-term debts, which are set to mature in two years, to maturities of three to 10 years. The move is part of its bid to ease a balance sheet that has been been “stretched” after the group increased its borrowings to acquire telecommunication towers in the Philippines and a broadband-cum-cable TV services provider in Indonesia. Celcom-DiGi merger 'progressing well'Vivek also updated that the merger between Celcom Axiata Bhd and DiGi.Com Bhd is “progressing well”, and that Axiata is submitting its draft circular for that deal to Bursa Malaysia for approval. “I don’t think the requirement of funding for equity in DNB is anything significant, compared to our overall balance sheet. Having said that, we have plans in place of how to de-leverage the balance sheet as well as how to improve the cash flow for us,” he added.

PETALING JAYA: The delay in Datuk Seri Najib Razak's trial involving the embezzlement of RM42mil in funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd may have caused other cases to be delayed, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic). "Because Najib's SRC case took a very long time (four years), many cases of theft, abuse of power, and corruption involving political figures were delayed and not brought to court. "The delay is made worse by the behaviour of Najib and his lawyers who use various excuses to delay the trial. "It is true as the English saying goes that justice delayed is justice denied," he said. A five-member bench led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat dismissed Najib’s appeal to set aside the conviction and sentence imposed by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 28, 2020.

Among Covid-19’s pernicious features, its incubation period is longer than many other respiratory viral infections, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus and rhinovirus. Scientists from Peking University and Tsinghua University in Beijing analyzed data from more than 140 studies to estimate the incubation period of Covid caused by different strains of SARS-CoV-2. The researchers also noted variable incubation periods across different age groups and severity of disease. “The findings of this study suggest that SARS-CoV-2 has evolved and mutated continuously throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, producing variants with different enhanced transmission and virulence,” Wannian Liang and colleagues said. Everyone who is infected and all foreign travellers are expected to isolate throughout the potential incubation period to prevent transmission to others.

BALIK PULAU: Parents of illegal motorcycle racers under the age of 18 can end up with two years’ jail, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both. This could happen once the police applies to impose these penalties against negligent parents under Section 33 of the Child Act 2001 in order to hold parents accountable when their underaged children end up as illegal racers, said Penang deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Fisol Salleh. Under Section 33, parents or guardians who leave their children unsupervised and uncared for under unreasonable conditions and periods can be arrested and charged. KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 19): Inter-Pacific Securities Sdn Bhd said market conditions are likely to remain mostly indifferent as the FBM KLCI appears to be toppish following its 7% rebound in July. However, it said sustained buying by foreign funds helped to limit the day’s losses and kept the key index comfortably above the 1,500 level. “Conditions in the broader market were also mostly directionless and this trimmed the fresh buying interest. Inter-Pacific said with fewer impetuses, and the ongoing results reporting season devoid of significant surprises, the wait and see conditions are likely to stay for the time being. “The sustained support should also keep the key index above the psychological 1,500 level for the time being.
