At the time Andy Murray, among others, called on the ATP to implement a domestic abuse policy. It took nearly a year after Sharypova first made her allegations public for the ATP to commission an investigation, in late 2021. That took 15 months and in January 2023 found “insufficient evidence to substantiate published allegations of abuse”. Zverev called the penalty order “complete bull----” and the upcoming trial is a result of him appealing that decision. It will see his case played out over 10 days in court, beginning in May and overlapping with both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Associate Health Minister Casey Costello Photo: NZ HeraldHealth experts are outraged at the associate minister's proposal to bring in a three-year freeze on tobacco excise tax. The minister, Casey Costello, of NZ First sought advice on a three-year freeze on the inflation-adjusted tax on smoking tobacco products. A freeze on the excise tax would mean the price of smoking tobacco products would not be increased based on inflation for three years. "Given the finance minister has stated last year that tobacco tax is an important revenue, it seems odd that a freeze on excise tax would be on the table." Costello has also proposed removing the excise tax from smokeless tobacco products, where the tobacco is heated to a vapour rather than burned.

This year, we speak to individuals who made their mark on 2023 and brought us truly impactful work. Isobel Kerr-Newell is CEO of VideoTaxi and Artemis Communications and has extensive experience in the communications industry in New Zealand and overseas. While AI is no longer a new thing, 2023 really felt like it was the year it went mainstream. It was also the year it delivered us Kanye West singing a Taylor Swift song (like that would happen in the real world!). I will remember 2023 as the year…The world went crazy yet again and we all got acquainted with the term “crisis fatigue”.

Is anyone going to say something about Stuff’s new design? I feel between Golriz’s shoplifting and NZ declaring war on one of the poorest countries on earth that we all missed Stuff’s garish design ‘upgrade’. It’s like a social media platform for girls who go to private schools, if that was what they were aiming for, they’ve nailed it. Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here. Dr Francl, who loves a cup of Assam without milk, urges her fellow Americans not to microwave tea, but to get a kettle instead. But the US Embassy insisted it would “continue to make tea the proper way – by microwaving it”. The Cabinet Office weighed into the row afterwards, with a statement saying: “We appreciate our special relationship, however, we must disagree wholeheartedly. “I think Americans don’t know how to make a good cup of tea.
