Health Minister Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu says his ministry is willing to offer assistance to the medical aid ship YWAM Koha which is stranded in Fiji. Ratu Atonio said they were unaware the ship was facing difficulties but added the ministry was willing to help if asked to. “If they ask for help we’ll see what we can do, but Government has to approve,” Ratu Atonio said. In an earlier interview with this newspaper YWAM Ships Aoteroa Ltd managing director, Marty Emmet said they had not asked for assistance from the Ministry of Health but would appreciate help from Government. Mr Emmet said they had collected 96 per cent of the $100,000 needed to fully fix the mechanical problem.

The number of people arriving in New Zealand on work visas continues to steadily climb back towards pre-Covid levels. The latest figures from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment show 18,627 people arrived in NZ on work visas in October this year, following 19,533 arrivals in September and 17,436 in August. They rose to several thousand a month between April and August 2022, passing 10,000 a month from September 2022, and remaining above 15,000 a month for all of this year. In the 12 months to end of October this year 202,770 people arrived in NZ on work visas. That is, however, still significantly below the 242,931 that arrived pre-Covid in the year to October 2019.

The Herald then sought his full criminal history which was eventually granted by the court. “The arresting officer attempted to grab [Cropp’s] arm to place him in handcuffs and he pulled away,” court documents state. “She wants to keep a close eye on me, with having the pacemaker,” Cropp told Judge Hix. The lawyer told the court Cropp wanted to move on with his life but the “repeated incursions of the media have put a strain” on him.

The man, who has interim name suppression, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday before Judge David Robinson. He told the jury the man had preyed on his two stepdaughters for about eight years, even burning one of them with a cigarette. The trial is expected to last the remainder of the week and the complainant’s cross-examination will continue today.
