The red tide of 2020 has been reversed, sweeping away seats Labour has held for decades including the "red wall" of Auckland seats that have gone to National. National could lose or gain a seat, but whatever the final count is the majority will still be uncomfortably small. With the exception of Labour, which has taken a thrashing, all the parties had something to celebrate. ACT's big success was deputy leader Brooke van Velden taking the previously safe National seat of Tamaki from Simon O'Connor. It previously held just one electorate seat, and has taken three from Labour.

The 'headline' CPI figure is made up of 'tradable' inflation imported from overseas (think fuel, for example) and 'non-tradable' domestically-generated inflation. So, it is the domestic inflation that is vitally important - and that's what's looked particularly problematic of late. According to the June 2023 CPI figures, at that time our 'non-tradable', domestic inflation annual rate was 6.6%, while the 'tradable', imported inflation was 5.2%. In fact our annual rate of domestic inflation has now been at 6.3% or higher for five whole consecutive quarters. Is it really all just about the domestic inflation figure though?

For several hours around that time, people lucky enough to be in a narrow 200km-wide corridor crossing North, Central, and South America get to experience an annular eclipse of the sun. Sometimes called a "ring of fire" eclipse, this event happens when the moon moves directly in front of the sun as seen from Earth. Instead, during the maximum phase of the eclipse, the lunar disk is surrounded by a ring of light, making for one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles. Unfortunately, tomorrow’s eclipse is invisible from New Zealand; the next eclipse visible from our world is a partial one on the morning of September 21, 2025, when more than 70% of the solar surface will be covered by the moon, as seen from Dunedin. While we won’t have a front-row seat to this particular eclipse, weather permitting, the next few evenings offer southern stargazers excellent opportunities to spot the very young moon.

Not so devastating for the left generally, well done to both Te Pāti Māori and the Greens on increasing the left vote. TVNZ’s coverage of this last night was all a bit FPP, with a nod to vote splitting, and John Campbell shouting from the side ‘but look at the Greens!’ Menendez got the Greens 23% of the party vote in Mt Albert. Likewise the Greens’ court jester candidate in Dunedin, Francisco Hernandez’s team ran a strong campaign, with the Greens getting 26% of the party vote there. The Greens have long campaigned in electorates they cannot win because it raises their party vote.

Every party except Labour and the small parties had a pretty good night. The Greens picked up three electorate seats although I suspect they will be disappointed their party vote was not higher. In 2017 Labour and the Greens picked up a seat each after the counting of special votes. In 2020 Labour and Te Pati Maori picked up one seat each after special votes were counted.

The National Party will lead the next government after winning 39% of the vote in a blue wave that swept the country and left Labour decimated. Party leader Christopher Luxon said he’d called Act’s David Seymour to congratulate him on winning Epsom and a total of 11 seats. “That’s what New Zealand is going to get out of this election as far as New Zealand First is concerned”. She criticised Labour for focusing its campaign on attacking National instead of pitching voters a progressive vision for New Zealand. And to all of those who didn’t vote for National: we won’t let you down either,” he said.

The latest vote count projects that National would win 50 seats, Labour 34, the Greens 14, Act 11, NZ First 8 and Te Pāti Māori with four seats. It had National on 35.5 per cent, Act on 11 per cent and NZ First on 6.1 per cent. Wairarapa: The same equation for Andersen also applies to incumbent Labour MP Kieran McAnulty, who faces a challenge from National’s Mike Butterick. Who they will be depends on who wins their electorate contests, as well as what Labour’s party vote finishes on. Senior Labour MP David Parker.

Guardian News published this video item, entitled “New Zealand abandons Labour as country votes for National party” – below is their description. New Zealand voters have delivered a forceful rejection of the Labour government and a surge in support for the National party. Speaking to a large crowd of party-faithful at his election night event in Auckland, National party leader Christopher Luxon said his party was on course to form the next government with libertarian party Act. The result marked a dramatic change in fortunes for the Labour party, which three years earlier – led by Jacinda Ardern – secured a historic mandate, but saw its support dwindle in the face of rising living costs and the Covid pandemicGuardian News YouTube Channel

“Special” votes are counted after election day. These include votes cast abroad, but a common misconception is that these account for the majority of “specials”. All votes cast out of your own electorate are special votes (including, this election, both Christoper Luxon and Chris Hipkins’ advance votes). In 2017 there were 446,287 – roughly 17% of the total – special votes cast. When will the final result of the election, including special votes, be revealed?
